About this Report

The Media Management Performance report provides information whether the following MediaAgent resources in a CommCell are being fully utilized based on read/write throughput and data size values and number of jobs performed (including duration):

When to use this Report

Use this report to identify under-performing resources. The following examples describe some scenarios where this report can be used:

What this Report Contains

This report generates the following sub-reports:

Sub-Report Sections Description
Read/Write Throughput Write Throughput vs MediaAgents Chart The chart displays the write throughput values over a specified time range for each MediaAgent in the selected CommCell. The following jobs are used to calculate the throughput values:
  • Backup jobs (including disaster recovery and synthetic full)
  • Restore jobs
  • Auxiliary copy jobs
Write Throughput vs MediaAgents Table The table displays the same information as the chart.
Read Throughput vs MediaAgents Chart The chart displays the read throughput values over a specified time range for each MediaAgent in the selected CommCell. The following jobs are used to calculate the throughput values:
  • Backup jobs (including disaster recovery and synthetic full)
  • Restore jobs
  • Auxiliary copy jobs
Read Throughput vs MediaAgents Table The table displays the same information as the chart.
Data Size Read/Write Data Written vs MediaAgents Chart The chart displays the size of the data written over a specified time range for each MediaAgent in the selected CommCell. The following jobs are used to calculate the data size values:
  • Backup jobs (including disaster recovery and synthetic full)
  • Restore jobs
  • Auxiliary copy jobs
Data Written vs MediaAgents Table The table displays the same information as the chart.
Data Read vs MediaAgents Chart The chart displays the size of the data read over a specified time range for each MediaAgent in the selected CommCell. The following jobs are used to calculate the data size values:
  • Backup jobs (including disaster recovery and synthetic full)
  • Restore jobs
  • Auxiliary copy jobs
Restore and auxiliary copy operations performed using NDMP drive pools (libraries directly attached to a NAS file server) are not used to calculate the data size.
Data Read vs MediaAgents Table The table displays the same information as the chart.
Number of Jobs Number of Jobs vs MediaAgents Chart The chart displays the number of backup jobs (including disaster recovery and synthetic full jobs) that were performed over a specified time range for each MediaAgent in the selected CommCell.
Number of Jobs vs MediaAgents Table The table displays the same information as the chart.
Usage Time Usage Time vs MediaAgents Chart The chart displays a summary of the backup jobs' duration (including disaster recovery and synthetic full jobs) over a specified time range for each MediaAgent in the selected CommCell.
Usage Time vs MediaAgents Table The table displays the same information as the chart.

How to Generate the Report

1.
  • From the CommNet Browser, click Reports.
  • Under Media Management Reports, click Performance Report.
2.
  • Under CommCell Selection, add the CommCells you want to include in this report.
  • Under Criteria Selection, select the performance information you want to display from the Plot drop-down list. Depending on your selection, you may need to change the Frequency from the Time Range Selection options.
  • Click Generate.

Scheduling and Saving a Report

After a report is generated, you can schedule a new report and save it to an specific location as a PDF, excel spreadsheet or MHTML file. Scheduling and saving reports will help you analyze and compare data from your CommCells.

Follow the steps below to create a schedule:

  • Click Schedule from the top of the report window.
  • Type the name of the schedule and enter a description.
  • Click Next.
  • Select the appropriate schedule options. For example:
    • Select the time zone.
    • Select the start date and the frequency to generate the report.
    • Change the Start Time to 9:00 PM
    • Click Repeat Task and configure at which interval the schedule should be repeated.
  • Click Next.
  • Select the file format.
  • Click Save To File to save the report to a local drive or network share.

Specify the Destination Path for the output file.

  • You can also click Send E-Mail to User(s) and/or User Groups(s) to send the report as an email attachment to a user or user group.
  • Click Finish.

The report will be generated as specified in the schedule task.

Customizations That You Can Perform With This Report

You can further customize the report by using the filters available in the report. To access the filter options, click Filters at the top of the report window as shown in the image. After making your selections, click Generate to update the report.

The following table describes the available filter options.

Filter Description
Time Range Selection You can adjust the reporting period by selecting the Frequency drop-down list. Based on the selected frequency, you can also:
  • Specify the number of hours/days/weeks/months. If the frequency is Hourly, you can select the data granularity in minutes.
  • Exclude the most current data by clearing the Include current period checkbox.
  • Display the performance values between a specified time.
Override CommCell Weekend configuration By default, the report treats Friday, Saturday and Sunday as the WeekEnd category. You can list weekend days separately by selecting Show Friday, Saturday and Sunday as separate days.
CommCell Selection You can refine your selection by adding or removing CommCells from the Selected pane.

If you do not want to include multiple CommCells in your report, click Single CommCell and select the CommCell you want to include from the drop-down list.

Criteria Selection By default, the report plots the Read/Write-Throughput information for all the MediaAgents in a CommCell. You can choose to plot this information across other media management resources (e.g., disk libraries, tape/optical libraries) by selecting the media resource from the across drop-down list. Based on your selection, you can perform the following granular selections:

(The following options are available if you are generating the report using the Single CommCell option.)

  • From the MediaAgent drop-down list, select the MediaAgent you want to include in the report.
  • From the Library drop-down list, select the library you want to include in the report. If you selected to plot the information across Physical/Logical Drives or MediaAgents Using Drives, you can select the Master Drive Pool to include in the report.

By default, the throughput value is calculated in GB/hour. You can choose to plot this value in MB/Second using the Plot throughput as option.

If you want to plot different information, select the performance criteria from the Plot drop-down list.
If a CommCell is no longer registered with the CommNet Server, the throughput and data size transferred information is automatically aged after a seven-day period. Once the data is aged, it will not be contained in the report.

Chart Options By default, the chart displays stacking bars with gridlines. You can change the chart display from the Using Chart Type drop-down list.
Resources to be plotted By default, the report plots the first 10 resources available. You can increase/decrease the number of resources to be displayed in the chart using the Draw graph using maximum of <n> resources option.

You can also choose to include all the resources in the report by clicking the Include all resources option.

Drive/Mount Path Selection By default, all drives/mount paths are included in report. You can choose the drives/mount paths you want to include by clearing the Include All option.
Show Only Under-Performing Drives By default, the report includes information for all drives. You can include only under-performing drives by selecting this option.

This option is enabled when you plot the information across Logical Drives (at the MediaAgent level), Master Drive Pools or Physical Drives (at the Tape/Optical Library level)
