Global Repository Cell (GRC)

What is GRC Requirements Post Migration Setup GRC Troubleshooting FAQ

Global Repository Cell (GRC) is a Remote Office Backup solution that automatically transfers metadata from a remote/branch office to a central CommServe. It helps in consolidating data from remote offices to the Central Office. GRC feature can also be used to achieve reporting of different remote cells from one central location with the help of CommServe Metadata.

You can create a GRC for different types of environments to make the data available to the destination CommCells in the following ways:

Remote Office – Branch Office

Central Office

CommServe

CommNet Server

This CommServe acts as the Global Repository Cell. Once GRC is setup, this CommServe will contain the metadata associated with all the clients in all the Remote Offices. This will in turn provide the ability to retrieve and restore data from clients in the GRC.

MediaAgent

Client Agents

Regular daily backups must  be scheduled from the clients to backup the data.

MediaAgent

Accessible MediaAgents with disc libraries configured Regular weekly Auxiliary Copy must be scheduled in the Remote Office using the Instance 2 of the shared MediaAgent as the target. This will enable the backup data to be transferred to the Central Office.

GRC Process

Imports the metadata from Remote Office and merges the information into the Central Office CommServe.

Once the metadata is imported, the Remote Office Clients  are visible as 'restore only' clients in the Central CommServe. These clients can be used to perform restore operations.

A special feature in the GRC Process is the ability to use the Shared MediaAgent as an Intermediary MediaAgent. Remote CommCell(s) may not be always reachable by the central office CommCell, hence there is a dedicated shared MediaAgent with multiple instances on it which can communicate with all CommCells participating in the GRC process.

This MediaAgent automatically collects the metadata from the remote office and makes sure that the metadata is transferred to the central office CommCell whenever network connection is available. DASH copy is used on WAN to make data available. This protects data from multiple remote CommCells (PODS) at the central office CommCell.

Peer-to-Peer case

When restore/recall capability is required for each client  of all CommCells involved in migration (for e.g. Exchange Mailboxes), a peer-to-peer setup comes handy.

You can restore the data backed up in any CommCell while moving across different geographical locations. Data is made available using different ways like multi instancing of the MediaAgent when local storage is used, or by DASH Copy when a shared MediaAgent is used.

laptop backups with Cloud type Storage

For setups with multiple offices and a number of employee laptops getting backed up to cloud storage, GRC provides browse and recover capability from anywhere.

This is achieved by making use of Cloud Storage or Network shares.
