Non-impact Printer Environment

It is strongly recommended to install all printers, including non-impact printers (laser, magnetographic printer, etc.) in a separate room to the computer room with its own air-conditioning system.

This recommendation, which is valid for "MATHILDE" and for all other competing printers, including those based on the non-impact principle, is designed to deal with the significant risks of pollution caused by:

• The handling of certain inks (toner) which generate abrasive dust. This toner could damage sensitive peripherals such as disks, magnetic tapes, etc.

A large volume of rapid printing generates a greater volume of paper dust than a traditional printer. If it is really not possible to install such a printer in a separate environment while maintaining maximum availability for the rest of the configuration, it is of vital importance that the following conditions be respected:

• The printer should be placed in the ventilated air draught and as far as possible from the disks and magnetic tapes.
• Full account should be taken of the significant heat dissipation of this hardware.
• The room should be cleaned frequently:
  • The floor should be cleaned every day
  • The plenum space of the raised floor should be cleaned approximately every six months
