The air-conditioning system is a cornerstone of the data processing installation. The proper operation of the computers depends, in part, on the dependability and appropriateness of this system.
It should perform three main functions:
As changes in temperature, especially sudden changes, accelerate the ageing of components, it is important that the ambient temperature be stable and be maintained within the limits required for the type of computer.
If the hygrometry is too low, static electricity can form; if it is too high, it can lead to corrosion and mould growth. It is therefore important to respect the margins indicated.
Computer hardware is sensitive to dust. While this is obviously true for the read heads of magnetic peripherals, it also applies to all machines where the clogging of internal filters could prevent their electronic components from being properly ventilated.
