Generator Set

A generator set consists of an alternator activated by a thermal motor. It can be used to supply current in the case of a prolonged power cut.

Its startup time can be relatively long; up to a few seconds. Furthermore, its voltage and frequency regulation is insufficient for providing power directly to data processing machines. It is therefore not possible to power a data processing site with a generator set alone; such a set must be associated with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (U.P.S.).

Advantage:

Virtually unlimited autonomy in association with a U.P.S., depending on the capacity of the fuel tank.

Disadvantages:

Needs a specific premises (mainly in urban areas).
Its relatively long startup time (frequency stability) means that a power backup system must also be used.
An excellent level of maintenance is required.
