The purpose of this document is to explain the various steps to update from SLES10 to SLES10 SP1 a machine whose system is installed on disks connected on a Promise SuperTrak EX4350/8350 RAID adapter. Pre-requisites -------------- A machine installed with SLES10, with a Promise SuperTrak EX4350/8350 RAID adapter. Updating to SLES10 SP1 ---------------------- 1) Boot the system using the SLES10 SP1 DVD. 2) In the displayed boot menu, select the "Installation" item, without hitting the key. Very important : before pressing , type the following text on the keyboard : driverupdate=1 (typed text is displayed in the "Boot options" field). Once text is typed, press the key. 3) When prompted to choose the driver update medium, removes the SLES10 SP1 DVD from the DVD drive, and insert the CD containing the updated drivers. Then, choose 'hda' in the devices list and press the key. 4) When the dialog box "Driver Update ok" shows up, press the key. 5) If everything went ok, the list of the detected disk partitions should be displayed. Choose "Back" in the "Please choose the driver update medium" dialog box. 6) When prompted to make sure the CD number 1 is in your drive, removes the CD containing updated drivers from the DVD drive, and insert the SLES10 SP1 DVD which was removed previously, then hit the key. 7) Once the graphical installer asks for a language, please choose the language you want to use, then click the button. 8) Then you have to accept the licence agreement, choose the correct option. 9) In the "Installation mode" step, choose the "Update" option, then click the button. 10) A list of partitions which can be updated will be displayed (although usually only one partition is displayed) if it's not the case please choose the correct partition (the one containing the / of the system you want to update). 11) Continue the update process until the machine has rebooted. Important note : Once the machine has rebooted, an error message stating that the graphical interface failed to start may appear. If this is the case, just continue the update process using the text interface. Once the update process is finished, the screen may blink 2 or 3 times, then showing another error message regarding the graphical display. Choose not to check the output of the X server, and hit the button. Now login as root, and run the 'sax2' command from the shell. 'sax2' will reconfigure your graphical parameters, thus allowing the graphical interface to be started. Once you quit 'sax2', just run the '/etc/init.d/xdm restart' command, and the graphical login screen will show up, meaning that the problem is fixed.
