Media Explorer for Unix provides the ability to restore, without the use of the CommServe, Unix file system data secured by data protection operations. This tool is intended for use in situations where it is not possible to use the CommServe to perform the restore. When you are using Media Explorer to recover Unix file system data, be sure to consider the following.

• Media Explorer for Unix platforms, rather than cataloging, uses a script through that you scan a volume for completed jobs to restore.
• Offsite recovery of data directly from the product media: Media Explorer can be used at offsite locations that may or may not be part of the CommCell to recover data secured by data protection operations. For example, recovering a job that was backed up by the product on a remote computer that is not a client of a CommCell.
• Recovering partially secured data: It is possible that a data protection operation containing multiple objects fails before completion. While the CommServe considers this a failed operation and will not recover the objects, Media Explorer can be used to recover those objects that were successfully secured.
