Restore Virtual Server Disks as Virtual Machines

The following procedure describe the steps involved in restoring virtual server disks.

  1. Begin a Browse and Restore procedure. The Restore Options dialog box is displayed.
  2. From the General tab, perform the following tasks:

    For Microsoft Virtual Servers/Hyper-V:

    1. Select Virtual Machine in the Restore As section.
    2. Select the Destination Client.
    3. Specify the Destination Path. Click Browse to locate the desired destination.
    4. Optionally, you can also select to Power ON Virtual Machine After Restore.

    For VMware:

    1. Select Virtual Machine in the Restore As section.
    2. Select the Destination Client.
    3. Specify the Destination Path. Click Browse to locate the desired destination.
    4. Provide the Virtual Center or ESX Server path to which the virtual machine will be restored.
      • Click Browse Virtual Center/ESX Servers for Destination to locate the desired destination.
      • Select the datastore to which the disk will be restored.
      • Click OK.

Information about the selected datastore, including space, type, etc., is displayed. If the selected datastore does not meet the minimum requirements needed to restore the virtual machine, you can repeat this step until an acceptable datastore is found.

    5. Provide the Server Logon account associated with the destination. If the credentials for the destination had not been previously configured, you can configure the account by clicking Configure Password.
    6. Optionally, you can also:
      • select to Power ON Virtual Machine After Restore.
      • provide an alternate name for the virtual machine.
  3. Continue the Browse and Restore procedure.
  4. While the job is running, you can right-click the job in the Job Controller and select Details to view information on the job. After the data has been restored, you will see a job completion message in the Job Controller and Event Viewer.

Restore Virtual Server Disks as Virtual Hard Disks

The following procedure describe the steps involved in restoring virtual server disks.

  1. Begin a Browse and Restore procedure. The Restore Options dialog box is displayed.
  2. From the General tab, perform the following tasks:

    For Microsoft Virtual Servers/Hyper-V:

    1. Select Virtual Hard Disk File in the Restore As section.
    2. Select the Destination Client.
    3. Specify the Destination Path. Click Browse to locate the desired destination.

    For VMware:

    1. Select Container File in the Restore As section.
    2. Select the Destination Client.
    3. Specify the Destination Path. Click Browse to locate the desired destination.
  3. Continue the Browse and Restore procedure.
  4. While the job is running, you can right-click the job in the Job Controller and select Details to view information on the job. After the data has been restored, you will see a job completion message in the Job Controller and Event Viewer.
  5. If you are restoring VMware virtual server disks as a container file and wish to mount the container file as a volume on the destination:
    1. Run the vmware-mount.exe utility from the command line as follows:

      vmware-mount.exe <drive_letter> <path_to_disk>

      For example:

      vmware-mount.exe Q: "E:\restore_folder\example.vmdk"

Note that the appropriate version of VMware Converter must be installed on the destination computer. See System Requirements - Virtual Server iDataAgent for information on supported VMware Converter versions.

    2. Once the vmware-mount.exe utility has been run, the mounted container file volume is available.

Restore Virtual Server Volumes

The following procedure describe the steps involved in restoring virtual server volumes.

  1. Begin a Browse and Restore procedure.
  2. From the General tab of the Restore Options dialog box, select the desired restore type. See Restore Data - Virtual Server for information on available restore types.
  3. Continue the Browse and Restore procedure.
  4. While the job is running, you can right-click the job in the Job Controller and select Details to view information on the job. After the data has been restored, you will see a job completion message in the Job Controller and Event Viewer.
  5. If you are restoring the volume as a physical volume, the volume must be mounted in the virtual server once the restore operation is complete.

For all other restore types, this completes the restore procedure.

Restore Files In-Place to a Virtual Machine

The following procedure describe the steps involved in restoring files in-place to a virtual machine.

Then, enter a username and password that has all permissions for the UNC path to which the data will be restored. This user should be allowed to create files in the destination folder of the virtual machine through the Virtual Server iDataAgent host computer as selected in the Destination Computer field mentioned in Step 3. Without these permissions, the recovery operation will not complete successfully.

Complete any additional selections in the Advanced Restore Options dialog box and then click OK.

  6. Complete any additional selections in the Restore Options dialog box and then click OK.
