Restore Data Directly using Wildcard Expressions

Before You Begin

• Review the general and agent-specific restore requirements accessed from Restore Backup Data prior to performing any restore operation.

To directly restore data using wildcards:

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the agent, instance or backup set that contains the data you want to restore, click All Tasks and then click the available Restore command (command names vary by agent).
2. In the Restore dialog box, type the wildcard expression that corresponds to the data that you want to restore, and click OK.

   For the broadest restore omit the path. To narrow the scope of the restore job, you should precede the expression with a path.

3. Optionally from the tabs in the Restore Options dialog box, select the restore options that you want to use. Click Advanced if you want to access the tabs in Advanced Restore Options dialog box.
4. Click OK.
5. After completing your selections, you can either start an immediate restore or schedule the restore.
   • If you want to schedule the job, click the Job Initiation tab from the Restore Options dialog box, click Schedule, and enter your selections in the Schedule Details (Schedule Details) dialog box. Clicking OK from this dialog box saves your schedule. See Scheduled Data Recovery Operations for an overview of this feature.
   • If you want to run the job now, accept or click Run Immediately in the same tab and then click OK.

   The progress of the restore job can be monitored using the Job Controller.

Browse and Restore Data Using Wildcards

To browse and restore data using wildcards:

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the agent, instance or backup set that contains the data you want to restore, click All Tasks and then click Browse Backup Data.
2. From the Browse Options dialog box, select the appropriate browse options and click OK.
3. From the Backup Data window, expand the file system tree to open the structure of the file system.
4. Select the data that you want to restore, and then click Recover All Selected.

   You must select data from the Backup Data window even if you only want to restore data via wildcard expression. If you do not select data or files, you are denied access to the Advanced Restore Options dialog box, which you need in order to enter the wildcard expression. You can always deselect the data as described later in this procedure. Optionally you can also perform mixed mode restore by selecting the necessary data in the Backup Data window and then specifying the wild cards as described in the steps that follow.

5. Click Advanced. 

   In the Paths/Filters tab for the Advanced Restore Options dialog box, the Source Paths pane shows the path of the data that you selected.

6. From the Paths/Filters tab, do the following:
   • Click Add in the Source Paths pane to specify a wildcard expression or some specific file or path that must be restored. Type the wildcard expression or some specific file or path in the Enter Path dialog box and then click OK.
   • If necessary, select the entry in the Source Paths pane and click Delete, to deselect the data that you selected in the Backup Data window
7. Optionally, select any additional Advanced Restore Options that you want to use.
8. Click OK.

   If both wildcard expressions and specific data paths are specified (i.e., a mixed mode restore), the system displays the message that any directories that are to be restored in the job will be restored empty. Click Yes to continue the operation or click No to change the necessary options.

9. Optionally from the Restore Options dialog box, select the restore options that you want to use.
10. After completing your selections, you can either start an immediate restore or schedule the restore.
    • If you want to schedule the job, click the Job Initiation tab from the Restore Options dialog box, click Schedule, and enter your selections in the Schedule Details (Schedule Details) dialog box. Clicking OK from this dialog box saves your schedule. See Scheduled Data Recovery Operations for an overview of this feature.
    • If you want to run the job now, accept or click Run Immediately in the same tab and then click OK.

    The progress of the restore job can be monitored using the Job Controller.

Restore Mixed Mode Data

To restore mixed mode data:

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the backup set that contains the data you want to restore, click All Tasks and then click Restore.
2. In the Restore dialog box, type the wildcard expression that corresponds to the data that you want to restore, and click OK.

   For the broadest restore omit the path. To narrow the scope of the restore job, you should precede the expression with a path.

3. Click Advanced.

   In the Paths/Filters tab for the Advanced Restore Options dialog box, the Source Paths pane shows the path of the data that you typed.

4. From the Paths/Filters tab, click Add in the Source Paths pane to specify a wildcard expression or some specific file or path that must be restored. Type the wildcard expression or some specific file or path in the Enter Path dialog box and then click OK.
5. Optionally from the tabs in the Advanced Restore Options dialog box, select the restore options that you want to use
6. Click OK.
