Install the CommNet Browser - Macintosh/Linux

Install Requirements

Review the following to avoid common problems:

  • Before installing CommNet Browser on the Macintosh/Linux platform, verify that the appropriate version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is installed. See System Requirements - CommNet Browser.
  • You need the commnetadd utility to install the CommNet Browser on Macintosh. This tool/utility is included in the Resource Pack available in Maintenance Advantage Web site. Download the latest version before using the tool/utility.
  • Verify that the computer satisfies the minimum requirements for the software provided in System Requirements - CommNet Browser as a Stand-Alone Application.
  • If your network does not have DNS lookup or some other name resolution facility, you may be asked to enter the IP address of the CommNet Server.
  • Verify hardware devices such as disk arrays are configured and confirm connectivity to all drives.

Install Checklist

Collect the following information before installing the software. Use the space provided to record the information, and retain this information in your Disaster Recovery binder.

Before You Begin

  • Close all applications and disable any programs that run automatically, including anti-virus, screen savers and system utilities. Some of the programs, including anti-virus software, may be running as a service. Stop and disable such services before you begin. You can re-enable them after the installation.
  • Log on to the client as root.

Install Procedure

Getting Started

1. Open the Terminal window, and execute the commnetadd utility.  
2. The CommNet banner and other information is displayed.

Press Enter to continue.

 
3. Read the license agreement if it appears.

NOTES

  • You may have to press the space bar several times to page through the entire agreement.

Type y and press Enter to continue.

 
4. Type the name of the CommNet Server and press Enter to continue.

NOTES

  • You can enter the short or long name of the CommNet Server.
Please enter the CommNet Server name.

It can be either short or long; the only requirement is that it has to be resolvable by the name services configured on this machine.

5. Specify the location where you want to install the software.

NOTES

  • The amount of free space required depends on the components selected for install, and may look different from the example shown.

Press Enter to accept the default path and continue, or
Enter a path and then press Enter to continue.

Press Enter again to confirm the path.

Please specify where you want us to install CommNet binaries.

It must be a local directory and there should be at least 10MB of free space available.

6. Press Enter to continue.

The install program now starts copying the software to the computer. The progress is displayed.

We are now ready to copy binaries.

Post-Install Considerations

  • Install post-release updates or Service Packs that may have been released after the release of the software.

Uninstall

To uninstall the CommNet Browser on a Macintosh:
  • Log on to the client as root.
  • Open a terminal window and enter commnetrm. Press Enter to continue. 

The browser will automatically uninstall.
