Media Management Media Prediction Report
This report uses the
Activity Qualifier Window,
which is based on the settings in the
Cell
Configuration (Data Protection Window), and provides the following information for each library in the
CommCells:
- Predict when each tape/optical library will run out of spare media. This is calculated
by looking at the media consumption and media available in the scratch pool
for each library.
- Predict when each magnetic library will run out of free disk space. This
is calculated by looking at the capacity consumption and capacity available on all of the mount paths configured for the library.
- Predict the media consumption (for tape/optical libraries) or capacity
consumption (for magnetic libraries) for a specified period (month/week/day).
This is calculated by considering the history of media consumption for the
specified period.
In addition, for tape/optical libraries, information on the number of
removable media that will be used and
recycled in the specified period will also be provided. In the case of magnetic
libraries, the capacity consumption and capacity freed in the specified period
will also be provided. Note the following:
- The Day When Spare Media/Space Runs Out Using Freed Media
column provides an "optimistic" prediction by taking into account the spare
removable media that will be freed each day. However, the Day
When Spare Media/Space Runs Out Without Using Freed Media column provides a
"pessimistic" prediction by only using the spares currently available in the
library.
- Media used or recycled in the current day, week or month (depending on the
selected history period) will not be considered for prediction. For example,
if you predict media consumption based on the last 14 days (or week/month),
the current day (or week/month) will not be considered for prediction. Note that the prediction is based on the selected period, even though the
graph displays history information associated with a maximum of 14 days only.
Use the Period Selection filter to obtain
accurate prediction based on the pattern for data protection operation in your organization.
You may notice a change in the predicted values when you vary the days used
for predicting the media consumption (history days) and/or the repetition
pattern. Consider the following points on this issue:
- Media prediction is based on media consumed in the specified history
dates. If the media consumption on these history days are not consistent, then
the predicted value may also differ.
- Consider the data protection pattern in your environment and specify that pattern
in the report to obtain a more accurate prediction. For example, if you have
regular data protection operations scheduled across each week, select 1 week as the repetition
pattern. Alternatively, if your data protection operation pattern is spread across 2 weeks,
select 2 weeks as the repetition pattern, and so on.
NOTES
- You can sort within columns by clicking the column title. For instance, this
is an easy way to see a list of libraries that will run out of spares.
- For tape/optical libraries, the Default Media Type is
displayed in the report only when the Auto-Discovery of Media option is
enabled in the library. (Use the CommCell Console to enable the automatic
media discovery in the library, if necessary.)
