Uninstall Components from a Windows Computer

Click on a link below to go to a specific section of the component uninstallation:

Overview

The following sections describe the steps in uninstalling a component from a Windows computer in clustered and non-clustered environments.

Before You Begin

Consider the following before you uninstall a component from your computer:
  • All Windows components (except MediaAgents and the CommCell Console) are dependent on the Windows File System iDataAgent. You cannot uninstall the File System iDataAgent before uninstalling the other components.

  • If components were not installed in the default location, you will have to manually delete the directory/folders once the uninstall is complete.

  • Verify that no jobs are in progress or scheduled to occur while the software is being uninstalled. If jobs are scheduled, either perform the uninstall at another time or disable the jobs on the client computer using the CommCell Console.

  • Verify that the CommCell Console and Service Control Manager window are closed.

Consider the following for clustered uninstalls:

  • The software for a virtual server must be uninstalled from each computer in the cluster configured to host that virtual server, on which the software had been installed.
  • Verify that the cluster is set to its original state (i.e., the active and passive nodes are in the same state of ownership for their disk groups as they were during installation).

  • For a CommServe in a clustered environment, it is possible to remove the CommServe software from just one node of the cluster, while allowing it to continue to function on the remaining node(s). To do so, you must ensure the computer from which you are uninstalling the CommServe is a passive node. If you uninstall the CommServe from an active node, this will cause it to stop functioning because this will also remove the database.
  • For uninstalling a MediaAgent or Client from a cluster virtual server, it is recommended that users uninstall the active node first and then continue and uninstall all passive nodes. This will ensure that GxClusterPlugIn resources are removed properly.

Consider the following for CommServe uninstalls:

  • Do not remove the CommServe software unless you wish to remove the entire data management system. Once you remove the CommServe software, the system can no longer provide services for data protection operations.
  • Removing the CommServe stops the entire CommCell from functioning. Make sure that you have uninstalled any remotely installed MediaAgents or agents prior to removing your CommServe.
  • The CommServe software can only be removed by a user that is a member of the local Administrators group.
  • If you have configured your CommServe and MediaAgent for firewall support, make sure you deconfigure ports you have designated for firewall use.
  • The CommServe must be the last element of a CommCell to be removed. If necessary, open the CommCell Console and expand the Client Computers and Storage Resources nodes in the CommCell Browser tree. Then verify that there are no client computer or MediaAgent instances. If any instances of these items do exist, you need to remove them.
  • Close any open user connection to the CommServe database through either SQL Analyzer, Enterprise Manager, isql, osql, or any other. The CommServe Uninstaller may not be able to delete the CommServe database.

Consider the following for MediaAgent uninstalls:

  • Verify that the CommServe computer is accessible and all services on the CommServe and the MediaAgent in which you wish to perform the uninstall are running.
  • Ensure that you remove the NDMP Remote Server software, if the software has been installed along with the MediaAgent.
  • If you have a QR Policy configured using the specific MediaAgent, deconfigure the QR Policy before uninstalling the MediaAgent.

Consider the following for NDMP Remote Server (NRS) uninstalls:

  • Ensure that all NAS clients have been deconfigured or that they are using storage policies for either NAS attached libraries or for NRS attached libraries on another MediaAgent than this one. For more information on deconfiguring a NAS client, see Deconfiguring Agents.

Consider the following for DataArchiver uninstalls:

  • Before uninstalling the Exchange Migration Archiver Agents or Outlook Add-In, verify that the Microsoft Outlook application window is closed. In the event that an Outlook Add-In session is still active during uninstall of the Exchange Migration Archiver Agent, the Outlook Add-In's search capability will continue to function however no data will be recovered.
  • Once you uninstall the Exchange Migration Archiver Agent software, the system can no longer provide archive and recovery operations for the client from which the Agent has been removed.
  • Before uninstalling the File Archiver for Windows Agent, keep in mind that any unrecovered stub files cannot be deleted after uninstalling the agent unless the Microsoft command-line tool to Delete File and Reparse Points (i.e., DELRP.exe) is used to delete them. Refer to www.microsoft.com for more information on the use of this tool.
  • Unlike other components, Exchange Compliance Archiver does not give a destination client to retrieve data. If this component is uninstalled, cross-machine retrieval cannot be run.

Consider the following for Quick Recovery Agent uninstalls:

  • Once you uninstall the Quick Recovery Agent software, the system can no longer recover the Quick Recovery volumes you have created for that client. Re-install the Agent if you want to recover these previously created volumes.

Uninstall Procedure

Follow this procedure to uninstall a component from a Windows computer:
1. Read the Before You Begin section before continuing with the uninstall procedure.
2. Log on to the client computer as local Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group on that computer.
3. Open the Add/Remove Programs icon in the system’s Control Panel.
4. Select the component(s) to be uninstalled and then click Remove.

NOTES

  • The list of components displayed in the menu will depend on the components installed on the computer and may appear different than the example shown.

For a complete list of Windows components, see Components on Windows.

  • If you are uninstalling components from a Microsoft Windows Vista platform, a message is displayed asking if you would like to stop services prior to continuing the uninstall. Select Do Not Close Applications if this message appears.

If you are uninstalling from a computer that uses Multi Instancing, you will see the Instance number to which each component was installed; be sure to select the correct instance of the component you want to remove.

Click Remove.

5. Click Yes to confirm.

NOTES

  • If you are uninstalling the CommServe, observe the following:
    • Make sure all other platforms are uninstalled before continuing.
    • You will need to provide the SQL password for the System Administrator account before continuing.

6. Select the desired language.

Click Next to continue.

7. This prompt will be displayed if you are uninstalling a MediaAgent and have Storage Policies configured.

Click Yes to continue.

NOTES

  • When you uninstall a MediaAgent without deleting a Storage Policy, you can re-install the MediaAgent in a new directory or on a new computer without losing the data.

If you are not uninstalling a MediaAgent, skip to Step 9.

If you are uninstalling a MediaAgent, proceed to the next step.

8. Type Confirm and then click OK.
9. Click Yes to delete the folder containing your log files, job control files and program files.
10. Click Yes to delete the install folder.

Uninstall Procedure – Clustered Environment

Follow this procedure to uninstall a component from a Windows computer in a clustered environment:
1. Read the Before You Begin section before continuing with the uninstall procedure.
2. Log on to the computer as the Domain User with administrative privileges to all nodes in the cluster. If the currently active node is not the original node, manually fail over the active node to the original node and then perform the uninstall.

NOTES

  • To figure out whether a node is the original owner, open the Add/Remove Programs icon from the Windows Control Panel and verify whether there is an entry for the component that is being uninstalled. The entry will be available only in the original owner node.
3. Open the Add/Remove Programs icon from the Windows Control Panel.
4. Select the component(s) to be uninstalled, including the virtual server. (For a complete list of Windows components, see Components on Windows.)

Click Remove.

If you are uninstalling from a computer that uses Multi Instancing, you will see the Instance number to which each component was installed; be sure to select the correct instance of the component you want to remove.

Click Remove or Change.

NOTES

  • If the Change button is displayed when you select a component from the list, there is more than one of that component installed to that Instance. In this case, click the Change button.
  • The Change button will not be displayed if there is only one of the selected components installed on that Instance, in which case you should click the Remove button.

9. Click Yes to uninstall the application.
10. A dialog box may appear indicating that one or more shared files are present.

Click Yes to All, then Yes to remove the shared files. The uninstall only removes files installed by the component software.

NOTES

  • If some elements of the program could not be uninstalled, a dialog box indicates this condition. A file may still be open or in use. Click Details for a listing of the files or folders that could not be uninstalled.
  • If you are uninstalling the CommServe, observe the following:
    • The uninstall program does not delete the <install directory>/base folder. These folders are only removed when your host machine is restarted. If you do not want to restart your host system, then manually delete these folders.

From your Cluster Administrator, verify that the cluster resources were removed.

11. Press <F5> to refresh the Add/Remove Programs screen.
12. Repeat Steps 4 through 11 until all desired components are removed from the virtual server(s).

If desired, you can repeat Steps 4 through 11 for the local machine to uninstall the software as well.

13. For Multiple Disk Groups, repeat all of the above steps for each virtual server on each disk group in the cluster.
14. This completes the software uninstall from this node in the cluster.

Repeat this procedure on each computer in the cluster configured to host the virtual server from which you uninstalled a software component, until that component has been removed from all nodes.
