A

activity control

A feature which can be used to enable or disable operations at the various levels in the CommCell hierarchy.

active media

The currently assigned media within each media group to which data is written during a backup. This media is also seen with an Active status from the CommCell Console.

Admissible SLA

Sets the benchmark level that is used to flag the CommCells, clients, applications, or subclients which do not have acceptable data protection coverage.

agent

A software module in the system that performs data protection operations.

alternate data path

Combination of MediaAgent, Library , Drive Pool and Scratch Pool which are added to a Storage Policy as an alternate data path, so that an alternate resource can be used for data protection operations, when a component in the default data path is not available.

appendable media

A media with free space available for writing data.

archive file

Contains data from a single backup of a single subclient.

Assigned Media pool

A logical repository for all used media in the library, located both inside or outside the library.

authoritative restore

A System State restore that causes restored data to be authoritative in relation to its replication partners. Once the data is restored, it is propagated to other domain controllers and overwrites any newer data on those computers.

automatic update

A feature which is used to download and install the necessary updates to the computers in the CommCell.

automated content classification policy

A feature used to schedule and automate data discovery and search operations, such as Legal Hold, Tagging, Restore to Review Set, and ERM Connector from the CommCell Console. (See also: Content Indexing and Search)

auxiliary copy operation

Copies the backup data that was created on a primary copy to all auxiliary copies within the storage policy.

backup filters

A feature used to exclude specified data from a backup.

backup series

All of the archive files on a given backup media originating from the same subclient.

Backup Set

A group of subclients which includes all the data backed up by the iDataAgent.

basic retention rule

A feature used to define the retention rules for data in days and cycles. (See also: extended retention rules)

baseline

For CDR, the initial transfer of data from the source to the destination.

Billable Entity

Distributes costs for storage entities to objects within an organization.

blind library

A library without a barcode reader. (See also: sighted library)

business continuance volume (BCV)

A mirror-image of an active production volume; obtained through split-mirror technology, a BCV can be created and used without affecting the production volume.

Catalog Server

A feature that enables to store a copy of the index cache on a MediaAgent computer thus providing index cache restores, shared index cache required for Gridstor settings, and job restartability.

Cell Client Groups

A feature which allows the creation of logical client groups for the purpose of analyzing specific applications or application types in the entire CommNet domain.

client compression

A feature that compresses data on a client computer before sending the data to backup media.

Client Computer Groups

A logical grouping of client computers in which selected options can apply to all member clients.

Cleaning Media pool

A logical repository for cleaning media in the library.

client computer

A computer in a CommCell that has agent software installed on it.

Cloud Storage

A feature that allows you to configure and use online storage devices for data storage and recovery. Cloud data storage delivers compelling economics to any IT environment struggling with data management.

Cloud Storage enables you to configure and use online storage devices — cloud storage devices — as storage targets.

Collect File

A file which records the path and name of each scanned file that is to be backed up or archived.

CommCell

The basic organizational unit of a data management system. A CommCell contains one CommServe StorageManager, at least one client, and at least one MediaAgent.

CommCell Administration

A user group capability that permits members of the user group to administer a CommCell.

CommCell administrator

A person having overall responsibility for the operation and maintenance of a CommCell.

CommCell Browser

The window in the CommCell Console which displays all the objects in the CommCell in a tree structure.

CommCell Console

The graphical user interface used to access and manage the system.

CommCell Migration

The feature that allows you to migrate metadata records of MediaAgents, Clients, and supported entities from one CommCell to another CommCell.

CommCell user

Any user who is able to protect and recover data, and perform administration operations using the system.

CommCell user group

A logical entity which serve as containers to which capabilities, CommCell objects and users are assigned.

CommNet Administration

A user group capability that permits members of the user group to administer the CommNet Server.

CommNet Browser

The graphical user interface of the software, run as a standalone application or remote web-based application.

CommNet Domain

Includes the CommCells that are registered with the CommNet Server.

CommServe

The software module that communicates with all clients and MediaAgents and coordinates operations (data protection, data recovery, and administration operations, job management, event management, etc.) within a CommCell. There is only one CommServe per CommCell.

CommServe Database Engine

A SQL server database in the CommServe that contains all information relating to the CommCell. See System Requirements - CommServe for specifications on CommServe Database Engine.

Common Technology Engine

Consists of the CommServe StorageManager and the MediaAgent software modules that provide the necessary tools to manage and administer the Client Agents and also manage the storage media associated with the CommCell.

Compliance Archiving

An operation which moves data from a Journaling Mailbox on the client computer to secondary storage media, for the purpose of complying with legal or business regulations.

Consistent Recovery Point

Snapshots created by QSnap, either of a QR Volume (when used with Quick Recovery Agent) or a Destination Path (when used with ContinuousDataReplicator) which represent a point-in-time on the source computer. (See also, Recovery Point.)

Content Director

Content Director offers the most accurate and proven solution to address the challenge of data and content classification and controlling information and business records throughout an organization. This provides an automated process and workflow for identifying, classifying, archiving, preserving and destroying records. The following features are available:

Content Indexing

A feature used to search archived data of supported file and message types by its content.

copy (storage policy copy)

The storage policy entity through which primary backup data is copied to secondary media.

CopyBack

A Quick Recovery Agent feature which copies the data from the specified QR Volume(s) to the selected destination volume(s).

Cost Category

Represents the estimated per megabyte cost to store and protect data on a type of storage entity.

D

data aging

Operation that logically deletes expired data based on storage policy copy retention.

Data Collection Policy

A logical entity which can be used to specify how often the system must automatically collect data from each CommCell.

data compression

A method of reducing the amount of space needed for storing data. (See also: Client compression, Hardware Compression)

data encryption

The software uses asymmetrical encryption. The plaintext is encrypted with one key (called public), and can be decrypted only with the other key (called private). The software uses public key encryption to avoid prompting for a pass-phrase each time a backup runs.

Data Integrity Validation

Data Integrity Validation allows you to verify the integrity of the data secured by data protection operations.

data multiplexing

A feature that allows data from multiple clients/subclients to be written to the same drive/media, when a set of data protection operations are running concurrently.

Data Replication

Data Replication enables you to create secondary copies of production data quickly and efficiently, using a combination of host-based replication and snapshot technologies. These real time data replication copies can be immediately accessed for fast recovery, used to create multiple recovery points or to perform traditional backups without impacting server performance.

The following Data Replication Solutions are available:

data stream

A data channel through which client data flows to a backup media.

Data Verification

A feature that checks the stored data to see that it is valid for recovery and auxiliary copy operations.

DeConfigure

A feature which can be used to release the license and clean up entries from the CommServe database, when the software uninstall process fails.

Deduplication of data

A data storage approach that eliminates storing redundant data on storage media. For example, content addressable storage (CAS) systems.

The following features enable data deduplication:

delta backup

See incremental backup.

differential backup

A backup of all of the data of a subclient that has changed since the subclient's last full backup.

Directive File

See On Demand Backup Set / Archive Set.

Disaster Recovery

The planning for and/or the implementation of a strategy to respond to such failures as a total infrastructure loss, or the failure of computers (CommServe, MediaAgent, client, or application), networks, storage hardware, or media. A Disaster Recovery strategy typically involves the creation and maintenance of a secure Disaster Recovery site, and the day-to-day tasks of running regular Disaster Recovery backups.

Disaster Recovery Backup

Backs up meta data and Windows registry data during two phases. Phase I backs up the data to a local or network path and Phase II backs up the data to media using an Disaster Recovery Backup storage policy. This data can then be restored using the CommServe Recovery Tool.

Disaster Recovery Backup storage policy

A storage policy used to store metadata to media. This metadata stores information about the CommCell and the backed up data. In case of a system failure, Disaster Recovery Backup data can be retrieved using this storage policy.

drive pool

Logical entities used to facilitate the sharing of a library's drives between multiple MediaAgents. (See also: master drive pool)

E

eDiscovery

eDiscovery provides an effective framework for the management of a range of information management activities including retaining and accessing archive e-mail messages, files and documents, along with along with other data backup solutions. The following features enable eDiscovery:

Enterprise Records Management (ERM) - Enables compliance users to submit content indexed documents and files to a record management site automatically or interactively.

Legal Hold - The process of identifying and segregating relevant documents found during a data discovery operation and preserving them in a physical repository for long term retention.

Tagging - User-defined property or information that can be assigned to search result items in order to categorize the search items and perform a search based on the associated tags at a later point of time.

Automated Content Classification Policy - Provides the ability to schedule and automate data discovery and search operations.

Enterprise Records Management (ERM)

A feature that enables compliance users to submit content indexed documents and files to a record management site automatically or interactively. (See also: Content Indexing and Search)

Erase Backup/Archived Data

A feature which marks data as unrecoverable.

Event Viewer

The window in the CommCell Console which displays the events associated with all activities in the CommCell.

Explicit Association

The manual association of a storage entity to a cost category from a CommCell Console.

Exported Media pool

A logical repository for all exported media in the library.

exportable media

A media which can be exported as it is not required for an Auxiliary Copy operation or prevented from being exported by the user .

extended retention rules

A feature used to define an extended retention time and days exceeding basic retention rules. (See also: basic retention rules)

EZ Backup and EZ Restore

A feature used to back up files and directories from the CommCell Console and restore them as needed, without requiring expert-level knowledge or understanding of advanced data management solutions and concepts.

Fan-in replication

Replication of data from multiple sources to a single destination.

Fan-out replication

Replication of data from one source to a multiple destinations.

File system Snapshots

A built-in feature of the Unix operating system which can be used to create point-in-time snapshots of volumes.

Foreign Media pool

A logical repository for media used by other applications and CommCells. This media pool is useful to manage such media using VaultTracker.

full backup

A backup of all of the data of a subclient. A full backup provides the baseline for subsequent incremental and differential backups. (Known as a level 0 backup in Oracle.)

Generic Enabler

A standard feature of the Quick Recovery Agent to support other hardware snapshots.

Global Filters

A feature which allows the definition of files/folder exclusions for data protection operations and attach them to any number of subclients within the CommCell.

Hardware compression

A feature that uses the compression facility in the hardware devices (library/drive) to compress the data before it is stored in the backup media.

I

Implicit Association

The automatic association of a drive type to a cost category in a CommCell.

in place restore

Data is restored to the original location (i.e., the same computer and path) from which it was backed up. (See also: out of place restore)

incremental backup

A backup of all of the data of a subclient that has changed since the subclient's last full, incremental, or differential backup.

index cache

A storage location maintained by a MediaAgent which contains the index data generated by the system when backups are conducted.

instance

The level in the CommCell Browser tree that represents the database that needs to be backed up. All subclients for the database are defined under an instance.

instance (File Archiver for Windows)

A File Archiver for Windows instance exists as a level in the CommCell Browser under the client and agent levels and represents the type of file system that needs to be backed up. The four types of instances include: Local File System, Celerra, Network File Share, and FPolicy. It is user-defined and is not created by default after installing the agent.

Intelligent DataAgent ( iDataAgent)

A software module that backs up and restores data of a particular application type on a host computer system.

Job Controller

The window in the CommCell Console which can be used to monitor and manage the active jobs in the CommCell.

jump start server method

A full system restore method that allows the downed server to boot from a jump start server (i.e., the boot net command is given from the boot console).

Legal Hold

The process of identifying and segregating relevant documents found during a data discovery operation and preserving them in a physical repository for long term retention.

Legal Hold Set

A special type of On Demand Backup Set that is used for Legal Hold purposes.

library

A storage unit that contains a robotic device, one or more media drives, and multiple media cartridges for extended storage capacity. Within the CommCell Console all storage devices are referred to as libraries.

Library Controller

The software module which manages the hardware operations of the arm changer within a storage device (e.g., mounting, unmounting, importing, and exporting media).

Library Type

Library types can be one of the following: Tape, Optical, Standalone Tape, or Magnetic.

List Media

A feature which can be used to predict media that is required for a data recovery operation.

logging mode

Transaction logging setting for Domino server.

Disk library

Configuration where DAS, NAS, or SAN disk is configured as a library to backup data to disk.

master drive pool

A logical entity that is used to facilitate the sharing of a library's drives between multiple MediaAgents. (See also: drive pools)

MediaAgent

The software module which transmits data between clients and backup media and manages the data stored in the media.

Media Explorer

A tool used to quickly view and recover data secured by data protection operations from any media when the system has been rendered unusable or inaccessible.

Media by Groups

A logical grouping for removable media in the CommCell Browser, which includes one or more of the following pools: Scratch, Cleaning Media, Retired Media, Overwrite Protect Media, Foreign Media and Assigned Media.

Media by Location

A logical grouping for all removable media in the CommCell Browser. Media By Groups is in-turn subdivided into Media in Library and Exported Media.

Media Prediction

See List Media.

migration archiving

An operation which moves data from a client computer to secondary storage media, for the purpose of reducing costs associated with backing up and maintaining the data on primary storage.

miniroot method

A full system restore method that requires the new root file system to be located on a different volume or partition than that for the original installation.

mount path

The location on a disk where backup data is stored. A disk library can have multiple mount paths.

Multi Tenancy CommServe

A CommServe hosted to be shared by multiple organizations, groups or companies without knowledge or intervention of using a single resource. It is a CommServe that can be rented by multiple tenants, hence the name Multi Tenancy CommServe.

N

Network Agent

A feature which can be used to increase the data transfer throughput from a client during data protection operations.

Network bandwidth throttling

A feature which can be used to control the amount of data transferred in a network during a data protection operation.

Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP)

An initiative from Network Appliance and IntelliGuard Software to develop an open standard for backing up data in a heterogeneous environment. NDMP uses a common data format which is written to and read from drivers for the specific disk and tape devices.

non-authoritative restore

A System-State restore that propagates newer data on the network to the restored computer, updating it with newer information.

non-preemptible jobs

A job that cannot be interrupted by the Job Manager service or be suspended by a user. (See also: preemptible jobs)

Notification Criteria

Notification criteria determines when and at which frequency and alert is sent to a recipient. An alert can be sent immediately after a condition occurs, or after the condition has persisted for a certain length of time. An alert can also be repeated, if necessary.

O

offline mining

The ability in which data (e.g., SharePoint Documents, Exchange mail messages) can be mined from an offline database.

On Demand Backup Set / Archive Set

A logical entity that allows data to be backed up or archived through a Directive File specified at the point of backup/archive. The Directive File contains the fully qualified path(s) to one or more Content Files which contain the fully qualified path(s) to one or more files, links and/or devices to be backed up. For some agents a single Content File is used in place of the Directive File.

one-pass restore

A type of restore that reads a backup tape once to gather the information and data necessary for restore.

operation window

A feature that excludes operations from running during certain time periods of the day.

Orphan Files

Files that are in the destination directory, but not the source directory.

Orphaned Media

Logical repository of all the assigned media which does not have any associated libraries.

out of place restore

Data is restored to a new location (i.e., different from the original location of the backup). (See also: in place restore)

Overwrite Protect Media pool

A repository which can used to preserve media (or the data in the media) and prevent the media from being overwritten.

P

pass-phrase

A phrase selected by the user to protect a private asymmetrical key on the CommServe or on media when using data encryption.

pass-phrase export files

Files with scrambled pass-phrase used to perform unattended data recovery operations of encrypted data that requires a pass-phrase.

persistent recovery

A type of stub recovery job that opens a common pipeline to recover archived data from magnetic media (also from tape for File Archiver for Windows). The job remains persistent to allow multiple stub recall requests to be submitted as a group, which reduces the time to open a pipeline for each stub recall request.

preemptible jobs

A job that can be interrupted by the Job Manager Service or be suspended by a user, and then be restarted. (See also: non-preemptible jobs)

primary copy

The logical entity in a storage policy through which all data protection operations are conducted.

primary restore

Used when all domain controllers in the domain are lost and the domain is rebuilt from the backup.

Primary Storage

Primary storage refers to data in active use from computer hard disks and/or volumes. (See also: Secondary Storage)

Proxy Agent

An Agent that is installed on a separate computer than the computer from which data is collected. For example, SRM NetWare Proxy Agent, SRM NAS Agent, SRM Oracle Agent, etc.

Q

SLA

Measures the data protection coverage aspects in short-term and various long-term intervals in order to determine if the data protection coverage for CommCells, clients, applications, or subclients are within an acceptable level or not.

QR Volume

A block level copy of a specified source volume for use in Quick Recovery and CopyBack operations.

QSnap

A combined software-snapshot engine and block filter driver. This preserves the original point-in-time data, ensuring an accurate snapshot for QR Volume creation and/or data protection operations. QSnap replaces the CSS software, cxbf block filter driver, and snap driver used in previous versions of the software.

qtree

A special subdirectory of the root directory in a volume with special attributes such as security style, disk space and file limits.

Recovery Point

Snapshots created by QSnap of a Destination Path; these do not represent a point-in-time on the source computer. (See also, Consistent Recovery Point.)

Remote install/upgrade

A UNIX-based install/upgrade method used to install/upgrade the software on multiple UNIX computers from a remote UNIX computer.

Registration

A feature used to initialize the CommCells in the CommNet Server.

Replication Log

Files on the source computer that log all file write activity, which are then transferred to and replayed on the destination computer.

Replication Log Replay

The extraction of all new or changed data from the Replication Logs, ensuring that the destination remains a real-time replica of the source.

Replication Log Transfer

The copying of the Replication Log from the source to the destination.

Replication Pair

A logical entity that defines a data replication source and destination.

Replication Policy

A centralized template through which configuration of replication sets/replication pairs within a CommCell can be accomplished. A replication policy consists of a common configuration for replication set and replication pair(s) that can be applied to target replication set/replication pairs within the CommCell.

Replication Set

A group of Replication Pairs.

Resource Management

Resource management provides integrated data reporting and predictive capabilities to optimize storage management and usage, reduce excess storage purchasing, or deliver improved business performance. The following Resource Management solutions are available:

restore by jobs

A feature which can be used to restore data associated with a specific data protection job.

restore filter

A feature used to exclude specified data from being restored.

retention period

The period of time for which a particular set of backup data has not exceeded its retention criteria. Once the retention period has elapsed and the data aging has been run, the data becomes unavailable for restores.

Retired Media pool

A logical repository for all retired media in the library.

schedule policy

A feature used to associate a schedule or groups of schedules and attach it to any number of clients/backup sets/subclients or storage policies within the CommCell.

scratch pool

A repository for new or pruned media which are available for use.

Secondary Storage

Secondary storage refers to backup or archival data moved to a storage media, such as tape media, optical media, magnetic volumes, etc. (See also: Primary Storage)

selective copy

The logical entity in a storage policy used by an auxiliary copy operation to copy full backups that meet the specified criteria, from the primary copy.

sighted library

A library with a barcode reader. (See also: blind library)

silent install/upgrade

A UNIX-based install/upgrade method used to enter responses to installation prompts directly into an auto-response file to install software faster and unattended.

Silo Storage

A feature that allow you to store deduplicated data on secondary storage devices for long term retention on offsite locations.

Smart Re-Sync

The seamless resumption of Replication Log Replay after an interruption in replication activity.

SnapProtect Backup

A feature that enables you to create a point-in-time snapshot of the application data to be used for various data protection operations.

Snapshot Copy

A snapshot copy of the storage policy is an additional copy of the protected data which is used in SnapProtect operations. The snapshot backup copy stores the meta data information related to the SnapProtect feature.

Snapshot Volume Unit (SVU)

A subclient content template, containing a set of specified volumes, and defining subclient content and configuration in a way that is common to a given set of Agents used with Recovery Director.

stand-alone drive

Any media device consisting of a single drive unit (e.g., tape drive). Storage media must be manually inserted into and removed from these devices, which generally lack media storage capability.

storage policy

A logical entity through which data from a subclient is backed up. A storage policy consists of one or more copies which associate data with particular physical media.

storage policy copy

A logical entity which provides the path to the backup data and also provides the facility to define the retention period for the data.

Stream

stub recovery

Any action that causes an open and read on an object (e.g., message or file) that has been archived, which invokes a recovery operation (not initiated through the CommCell Console) for that object.

Subclient

A logical entity that uniquely defines a unit of data on a client computer.

subclient policy

A logical entity through which configuration of multiple file system subclients within a CommCell can be accomplished from a centralized template. A subclient policy consists of one or more subclient templates which contain a common configuration that is applied to target subclients within a CommCell.

Synchronize Cells

A feature which is used to transfer the data from the CommCells to make the CommNet Server up-to-date.

synchronous copy

The logical entity in a storage policy used by auxiliary copy operation to copy backup data occurring on or after a selected date on the primary copy

synthetic full backup

An operation that combines the most recent full backup of the selected data with all subsequent incremental/differential backups and stores the result in a single archive file.

T

Tag

A system-defined or user-defined custom information that can be assigned to content indexed documents or files in order to categorize them and perform a search based on the tag at a later point of time.

Threshold Criteria

The threshold criteria of an alert determines at which level the condition within an entity must be reached before an alert is sent. This criteria can be percentage or value based. For example, if the threshold criteria is percentage based with a value of 12% for a Drives Offline alert, then when 12% or more of all the total drives within the entity go offline, an alert notification is sent to a recipient. Similarly, for example, if the same alert is value based with a value of 1, then when one or more of all the total drives within the entity go offline, an alert notification is sent to a recipient.

Tracking Policies

Tracking Policy defines the media to be moved, the location where it would be moved to and the time of its movement.

Performs software functions allowed by its member user group based on the capabilities of the user group.

User Group

A user group is a logical entity through which capabilities are assigned. A user group can either administer the CommNet Server or CommCell(s), or a combination of the two.
