The version of the operating system used is:

RedHat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server  Version 3 Update3 (kernel 2.4.21-20.EL)

Or

RedHat Enterprise Linux WorkStation  version 3 Update3 (kernel 2.4.21-20.EL).

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Features and Benefits

All products in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux family are based on a common software core--kernel, libraries, development toolchain, and utilities. This provides a homogeneous environment ideal for simplifying multi-system and desktop-to-datacenter configurations. The immediate benefit: simplified deployment of distributed applications, and a consistent environment for users and system administrators across the entire family.

For more information on these and other new features, please refer to the analysis.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Feature-Function-Benefit

Enterprise-focused release cycle

Red Hat Enterprise Linux family products have a release cycle specifically designed to provide a stable platform for all phases of an enterprise IT deployment. Major Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases will occur approximately every 12-18 months. This allows ISVs to focus on a common, stable platform, and customers to effectively plan migration and upgrade cycles.

Additionally, stable binary (ABI) and programming (API) interfaces are maintained for the life of each major release. This ensures that applications do not need to be modified or recertified during the life of the release.

Enterprise-class support

Red Hat Enterprise Linux products include a full year of support provided by Bull.

Red Hat Network

Red Hat Enterprise Linux products include one year of Red Hat Network's Update Module, a service that provides access to an intuitive graphical interface for managing system updates and errata, priority errata email notifications, dependency checking, and optional auto-update.

Extra packages

All Red Hat Enterprise Linux media kits include an Extras CD that provides easy access to a selection of packages that are not supported by Red Hat neither Bull. These, and additional packages that will be provided as they become available, may also be downloaded from the Red Hat Network "Extras" channel (included as part of all Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions).

The Extras CD includes IBM Java and BEA JRockit. The RHN Extras channel also provides MySQL and PostgreSQL server components (client-side components are included as part of the base Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution).

Languages

Focused on international standards, such as OpenI18N and GB18030, Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system has documentation and software available in 10 languages, including English, Japanese, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Italian, French, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Spanish.

Product Package Differences

Red Hat Enterprise Linux products are based on the same core kernel, libraries and utilities, and also share the same major package sets. However, because Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS is not designed for use in server environments, there are some differences between family members in terms of their server package sets. The following table summarizes these differences.
