Run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application - Windows
Before you Begin
- Ensure that the CommServe services are running on the CommServe computer.
- Ensure that the version of the CommCell Console you are using is the same
version as the CommServe.
- Ensure that you have a valid user account.
To run
the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application on a Windows computer:

Launch the CommCell Console from the Start | Programs menu, or by
clicking the CommCell Console icon on your desktop.

Enter the User Name, Password, and name of the CommCell you
wish to connect to.
Click OK to
continue.

If you have not activated the license yet, you will receive a
reminder prompt to do so.
Click OK to continue.
In a few moments, the CommCell Console will open.
Run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone
Application - Macintosh
Before you Begin
- Ensure that the CommServe services are running on the CommServe computer.
- Ensure that the version of the CommCell Console you are using is the same
version as the CommServe.
- Ensure that you have a valid user account.
To run the CommCell Console
as a Stand-Alone Application on a Macintosh computer:
- Log on as a root user to the Macintosh computer that has the CommCell Console
(stand-alone application version) installed.
- From a Terminal window, type console and press
Return. The Connect to CommCell window
is displayed.
- From the Connect to CommCell window,
type a valid user name and password for the CommCell in the
User Name and
Password fields. Then type the name of the CommCell in the
CommCell field. If you had previously
logged on to the CommCell Console and are logging back in, select the
CommCell name from the appropriate list. Click OK to log in.
In a few moments, the CommCell Console will open.
Run the CommCell Console as a
Stand-Alone Application in a Specific Language
Before you Begin
To access
the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application in a specific language, you need the following:
To
run the CommCell Console as a Stand-Alone Application in a specific language:
- Edit the CommCell Console Stand-Alone Application shortcut.
- Right-click on the shortcut, and select Properties.
- Edit the Target field with the appropriate ISO Language and Country
codes.
- For example, to start the application in French, use the codes: -Duser.language=fr -Duser.country=FR;
therefore, the shortcut would be edited as follows:
java -Duser.language=fr -Duser.country=FR -classpath
.;cv.jar;jhall.jar;mail.jar;activation.jar;cvinit.jar;bccrypto.jar company.CX
commserve_host.company.com 8401
NOTE
Make the appropriate substitutions, e.g., replace
commserve_host.company.com with the correct
CommServe host name.
- Click OK to save the
changes.
- Double-click the shortcut to run the application.
Run the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based
Application - Windows
Before you Begin
To access
the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application, you need the following:
- The CommServe computer must have
Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) 4 or higher Web Server
installed.
- The CommServe must be configured for web administration during the
CommServe installation.
- If you are using an alternate computer for web administration:
- Logon to the computer as an
Administrator or a member of the Administrator's group.
- Ensure that the computer has IIS installed and IIS Services are running.
(See Setting Up the IIS Server for Web
Administration for more information.)
- Install the CommCell Console.
- Configure the IIS Server settings in the CommCell Console from the
Control Panel to use the alternate computer's IIS Server.
- You must have a Java-enabled web browser with the correct version of JRE
installed. (See
System
Requirements - CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application for more information.)

- Remote access to the CommServe may not be available for computers running
outside of a firewall. To enable web access to the CommServe in this
scenario, you
must enable the firewall port specified in Microsoft Internet
Information Service (IIS) Web Server on the CommNet Server. (By default,
this port is 80.)
- The Java Web Start application may fail to launch if the Java cache
contains corrupted files. To resolve this issue. open the Java Control Panel
(located in the Windows Control Panel) and delete all Temporary Internet
Files. Then, close and relaunch the CommCell Console.

To
manually run the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application:
- Open a Java-enabled web browser from any computer with which the
CommServe is accessible.
- Type the URL of the CommServe in the browser.
By default, the URL is: http://<CommServe_name>/<web_alias>.
If you are using the IIS
of an alternate computer, the default URL is http://<name
of computer with IIS installed>/<web_alias>.
Note that the alternate computer must have IIS and the CommCell Console installed and
the IIS Server settings must be configured to use the alternate computer's
IIS server.
- The first time you attempt to access the CommServe remotely, the system will check to see whether the
Java plug-in is installed. If it is not, you
will be given the option to download and install it.
- When prompted by the Java plug-in installation window, select the
desired
location and then follow the instructions to download and install it.
- If prompted to use the Java plug-in as your default JRE, click Yes.
In a few moments, the Connect To CommCell window
appears.
To
run the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application using Java Web Start:
- Open a Java-enabled web browser from any computer with which the
CommServe is accessible.
- Type the URL of the CommServe in the browser.
By default, the URL is: http://<CommServe_name>/<web_alias>
If you are using the IIS of an alternate computer, the default URL is
http://<name
of computer with IIS installed>/<web_alias>.
Note that the alternate computer must have IIS and the CommCell Console
installed and the IIS Server settings must be configured to use the
alternate computer's IIS server.
- Click Yes if you wish to create Desktop and Start menu shortcuts
for the CommCell Console.
These shortcuts will allow you to subsequently access the CommCell
Console by
either clicking the Desktop icon or navigating to the software's folder in
the Start | Programs menu.
If you do not wish to create these shortcuts, click No.
Note that this option will only appear the first time you remotely access
the CommCell Console from that computer.
- In the Welcome dialog box, type the username, password, and
CommServe name.
In a few moments, the CommCell Console will be displayed.
Run the CommCell Console as a Remote
Web-Based Application - Linux
Before you Begin
To access
the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application, you need the following:
To
run the CommCell Console as a Remote Web-Based Application on Linux.
- Go to /usr/lib/Mozilla/plugins directory.
- Make a symlink to /usr/java/j*/jre/plug-ins/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
in the mozilla1.0.1 plug-in directory.

The ns version may not be the same, any version may be entered in the following
format ns<version>/libjavaplugin |
in
ln -s /usr/local/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla-1.7.8/plugins/rent
based on the version of java
- From any computer on the network, open a Java-enabled Web browser.
- Type the URL of the CommServe in the browser.
- The first time you attempt to access the CommServe remotely, the software will check to see whether the plug-in is installed. If it is not, you
will be given the option to download and install it.
- When prompted by the Java plug-in installation window, select the
location, and then follow instructions to download and install it.
- If prompted to use the Java plug-in as your default JRE, click Yes.
In a few moments, the Connect To CommCell window
appears.
To add or remove toolbars:
- From the CommCell Console menu, select View.
- Select Tool Bar or Status Bar to enable/disable the
option. A checkmark will appear next to the option when it is enabled.
To navigate CommCell Console
Windows
- From the CommCell Console, open the Windows menu.
- If you prefer to see only one window at a time, select Next or
Previous to scroll through the open windows or alternatively, select
Windows....
- If you prefer to see multiple windows together, select Tile commands to rearrange the windows within the main window.
In addition, you can navigate through open CommCell Console windows using the
ctrl+tab function.
To open the CommCell Browser,
Job Controller or Event Viewer window:
- From the CommCell Console, select Tools and the desired window.
- Alternatively, click the desired icon from the toolbar.
To select a CommCell
Console Windows Style
- From the CommCell Console menu, select View.
- Select the Look and Feel option, and select the desired
style. A checkmark will appear next to the option when it is enabled.
To
navigate User Preferences:
- From the CommCell Console, select Tools | Control
Panel.
- From the Control Panel, select User Preferences.
- From the
General
tab.
- Select Use this browser to open HTML files to open HTML files.
- Select Select Floating Restore Progress Bar on Submission of Restore
Job to view progress bar.
- Click OK to save your changes.
To
navigate User Preference:
- From the CommCell Console, select Tools | Control
Panel.
- From the Control Panel, select User Preferences
- From the
Job Filter Tab, select Retention Time (sec) to allot amount of
time in sec for job retention.
- Time (sec) can be selected using the up and down arrows.
- Click OK to save your changes.
To
change the default Event Viewer display:
- From the CommCell Console, select Tools | Control
Panel.
- From the Control Panel, select User Preferences.
- From the Event Filter
tab, select the severity level(s) that you want to use as the default.
- Type the maximum number of events to be displayed in the Event Viewer
(Default = 200).
- Click OK to save your changes.
To change
the table views for the Job Controller and Event Viewer:
- From the Job Controller
or Event Viewer windows in the CommCell Console, perform either of the following:
- Right-click any field within the associated window.
OR
- Click the Table Menu icon at the upper right hand corner of the associated
window.
The available options for that window are displayed.
- Select or deselect the parameters you want presented in the respective
window.
To modify
the JRE Installation with languages:
- From the Start menu, select Control
Panel.
- Select Add or Remove Programs (Programs
and Features in Windows 2008), locate the JRE Entry and click
Change.
- You will be prompted with Java Install Wizard, click Next
(click Modify in Windows 2008).
- You will be prompted Custom Setup dialog box.
- Click Additional Language, and select "This features, and all sub
features, will be installed on local hard drive".
- Click Next to install.
- Click Finish to Complete.
To
find an entity in a window:
- From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller
or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:
- Right-click any field within the associated window.
OR
- Click the Table Menu icon at the upper right hand corner of the associated
window.
The Find option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.
- Click Find.
A space to enter the entity you wish to find
appears at the bottom of the associated window.
- Type the entity you wish to find in the space provided.
If the entity
exists in the associated window, it will be highlighted.
To
filter the contents of a window:
- From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller
or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:
- Right-click any field within the associated window.
OR
- Click the Table Menu icon at the upper right hand corner of the associated
window.
The Filter option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.
- Click Filter.
An arrow will appear in the upper right hand
corner of each field in the associated window.
- Click on the arrow for the field containing the entities you wish to
filter.
A pull-down menu with all available entities in the associated
field is displayed.
- Select the entity by which you wish to filter the window from the menu
of available entities.
The window is filtered by the entity selected.
To
select the default windows to display upon login:
- From the Tools menu in the CommCell Console, click Control
Panel.
- Select User Preferences from the Control Panel. The User
Preferences dialog box is displayed.
- Select the General tab.
- Select the appropriate options to save the settings for the CommCell
Browser, Job Controller, Event Viewer windows. You can
also choose to save the settings for All windows.
- Click OK to save your changes.
The CommCell Console will remember the window display preferences used on
your next logout and retain those preferences for your subsequent login.
Notes
- The CommCell Browser is always displayed when you login to the CommCell
Console.
To
print the contents of a window:
- From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller
or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:
- Right-click any field within the associated window.
OR
- Click the Table Menu icon at the upper right hand corner of the associated
window.
The Print option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.
- Click Print.
A dialog box with the available printers will
appear.
- Edit the printing options as necessary.
- Click OK.
To
save the contents of a window to a file:
- From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller
or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:
- Right-click any field within the associated window.
OR
- Click the Table Menu icon at the upper right hand corner of the associated
window.
The Save to File option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.
- Click Save to File.
The Save dialog box is
displayed.
- Navigate to the folder to which you wish to save the file.
- Choose a name and format for the file (if you do not wish to use the
default name and format).
- Click OK.
To
email the contents of a window:
- From the CommCell Console, while focus in on either the Job Controller
or Event Viewer window, perform either of the following:
- Right-click any field within the associated window.
OR
- Click the Table Menu icon at the upper right hand corner of the associated
window.
The Email option is displayed at the bottom of the menu.
- Click Email.
The SMTP Parameters dialog box is
displayed.
- Enter one or more email addresses to send the contents of the window to.
- Modify the SMTP settings, if neccessary.
- Click OK.

To
hide deconfigured clients:
- From the CommCell Console, select Tools | Control Panel.
- From the Control Panel, double-click User Preference.
- In the
User Preferences dialog box, click Hide deconfigured
clients.
- Click OK.
The deconfigured clients should now be hidden from view.
