Getting Started - MediaAgent

Prerequisites

Quick Start

The following diagram illustrates the sequence of operations for getting started with the MediaAgent.

Where to go From Here

  1. Get familiar with CommCell Console. The CommCell Console is the graphical user interface that allows you to control and manage a CommCell. See CommCell Console for more information.
  2. Activate the license. If the Agent was installed using an evaluation license, make sure to activate the license. See Update Licenses for step-by-step instructions.
  3. Fine-tune the MediaAgent using the following key features:

    Management

    Data Aging

Data Aging is the removal of data from media and is based on the retention rules for aging data. By default, the retention rules are set to infinite. You can define retention rules based on the storage requirements of your organization.

See Data Aging for more information.

    Auxiliary Copy

Auxiliary copy allows you to create secondary copies of data secured by this Agent. By default data is stored in the primary copy. You can make copies of the data based on the storage requirements of your organization.

See Auxiliary Copy for more information.

    Encryption

Hardware Encryption allows you to encrypt media used in drives with built-in encryption capabilities, which provides considerably faster performance than data or auxiliary copy encryption.

See Hardware Encryption for more information.

Data Encryption allows encrypting data both for transmission over non-secure networks and for storage on media. The flexibility of key management schemes makes data encryption useful in a wide variety of configurations.

See Data Encryption for more information.

    Compression

Data compression options are provided for data secured by data protection operations. Compression reduces the quantity of data sent to storage and later when data is restored/recovered, the system automatically decompresses the data and restores it to its original state.

See Data Compression for more information.

    Deduplication

Deduplication stores a single copy of the redundant data, and any subsequent references to the same data are stored as pointers to the previously stored copy. Deduplication eliminates storing redundant data in backup storage which in turn facilitates longer retention periods.

    See Deduplication for more information.

    Silo Storage

Silo storage enables you to store deduplicated data on secondary storage devices, such as tape media. Silo storage enables to store deduplicated data for long term retention on offsite storage locations, preserving the deduplication.

See Silo Storage for more information.

    Additional features

The MediaAgent includes a host of other features that can be used to customize the data protection operations in your environment. For a comprehensive list of all features available, expand the Administration, Management, Operations, Best Practices and Troubleshooting options in the table of contents displayed on the left pane.

    Plan the Disaster Recovery

Before you use MediaAgent, be sure to review and understand the associated full system restore (or disaster recovery) procedure. The procedure may require that you plan specific actions or consider certain items before an emergency occurs.
