Overview

Selected agents can be installed on a computer that is not part of a CommCell and the computer can subsequently be added to the CommCell as a Client and/or MediaAgent. For the list of Agents and Common Technology Engine components that can be installed, see Decoupled Installation - Support.

This type of decoupled install is performed without involving the CommServe until you are ready to add the Client and/or MediaAgent to the CommCell. Once all necessary physical connections are established, the computer can be added to the CommCell. This feature can be useful, for instance, if you want to pre-image computers with the software at a central location, then ship them to where they will be used in the enterprise.

Conversely, a supported Client and/or MediaAgent can be pre-registered on a CommServe without being part of the CommCell. This is done by using an XML input file that provides all necessary information to pre-configure the Client and/or MediaAgent in the CommCell Database. This could be useful, for instance, when an operations center is preparing for clients to be added to the CommCell that are not yet ready to connect. For more information and instructions, see Register a Client Computer and XML Input File for Decoupled Install.

This Decoupled Install procedure and the Register a Client Computer procedure can be performed in any order, but both must be performed before the Client and/or MediaAgent is functional in the CommCell.

Silent Decoupled Install

For some agents, a decoupled install can also be performed in conjunction with a silent install. For more information and instructions, see Silent Decoupled Install on Windows and Silent Decoupled Install on Unix. This feature can be useful, for instance, if you want to run the script on many computers in an automated fashion. Human intervention is minimized and mass registrations can be expedited.

For Windows and Unix, you can perform a Decoupled Install using either the traditional or silent install method.

Upgrade

Once the CommCell components installed in the decoupled installation mode are registered with the CommServe and becomes functional, they can be upgraded as any other regular CommCell. CommCell components that are not registered with the CommServe cannot be upgraded.
