Restore Considerations for Active Directory Partitions

The following page describes the agent-specific restore options. Additional restore options are accessible from the Related Topics menu.

Access to Active Directory objects and attributes are controlled by a set of access privileges called permissions. To create an object and attribute, you need Write and Create permissions to the Active Directory tree. Similarly, to restore data, these same permissions are required.

When you restore data, the Active Directory iDataAgent restores the data using the Active Directory user account on the destination computer that was assigned. The identity of this account is revealed by the General tab of the Active Directory iDataAgent Properties dialog box.

Restore Considerations for this Agent

Before performing any restore procedures for this agent, review the following information.

Review the general restore requirements described in What You Need to Know Before Performing a Restore.
For the Active Directory iDataAgent, unlike File System restores of Active Directory data, Active Directory must be up and running in order to perform an Active Directory restore.
When you restore without browsing, the Restore from copy precedence feature becomes available in the Advanced Restore Options dialog box.

Objects and Containers

An object's organizational unit should be restored prior to restoring the objects that were originally contained within that organizational unit.
Should an object not exist in the destination tree or the object cannot be undeleted, the restore operation re-creates the object in order to restore its attributes.
When restoring on Active Directory, all parent containers in the object's path must exist on the destination tree. Attributes for Active Directory objects cannot be re-created if their parent does not exist.

Before performing any restore procedures for Active Directory Partitions, review the following information:

You cannot delete any schema objects. However, some of the objects can be modified subject to certain restrictions. See Restrictions on Schema Extension for more details.

Restore Destinations

The Active Directory iDataAgent allows you to perform in-place restores of Active Directory attributes for existing objects to the original path within the same Active Directory tree using the same Active Directory server from which the data was backed up.

You cannot restore an Active Directory attribute to a different tree path.
