Overview

The following page describes the agent-specific restore options. Additional restore options are accessible from the Related Topics menu.

The Sybase iDataAgent supports the following types of restores:

• Restoring and recovering entire Sybase databases
• Restoring and recovering portions of Sybase databases
• Restoring transaction logs

Sybase databases can be restored to the same instance or to different instances on the current machine. The databases can also be saved to the same instance on a destination machine (cross-machine restore).

Additionally, the Sybase iDataAgent supports:

• Restores with the Sybase database offline or online
• Point-in-time restores, which allow you to restore data from the full backup created at or before the point in time based on the date and time that you specify
• Step-by-step restores, which allow you to restore, per Sybase database, one backup of data at a time from the list of available backups as needed to bring the database to its current state
• Creation of additional devices to associate with Sybase databases and of paths for database files

For the Sybase iDataAgent, restore operations can be performed from the client, agent and instance levels in the CommCell Browser.

When there is a problem with the Sybase database or the client system (operating system, hardware, hard drives, etc.), full system restores may be required. See Restore Data - Sybase iDataAgent - Full System Restore for more information.

Restore Considerations for this Agent

• If the database is upgraded, the next backup that is run detects the new version. The version is refreshed and displayed in the instance Properties dialog box and for the SQL Server iDataAgent, it is displayed during a browse operation. For more information, see Browse Databases.

• Before performing any restore procedures for this agent, review the following information.
  • Review the general restore requirements described in What You Need to Know Before Performing a Restore.
  • Restores may fail if the Sybase server is started from a remote desktop session. To prevent this, start the Sybase server from the client console and then run your restores.
• For Sybase on Windows, if you restore an entire Sybase server and the software brings up the Sybase server, the Services window in the Windows Control Panel will not display "started" for the Sybase server unless you do the following:
  1. Shut down the ASE (data) server by running the isql command.
  2. Go to the Services window in the Windows Control Panel and start the services for the data server. Services for the Sybase server should subsequently be displayed as "started".

Restore Destinations

By default, the Sybase iDataAgent restores data to the client computer from which it originated; this is referred to as an in-place restore. You can also restore the data to another Client computer in the CommCell. Keep in mind the following considerations when performing such restores:

• The destination client must reside in the same CommCell as the client whose data was backed up.
• Note that when you perform restores other than in-place restores, the restored data assumes the rights (i.e., permissions) of the parent directory.
