LAN Copy Manager

Overview

The following types of Copy Managers are available:

LAN Copy Manager

LAN Copy Manager is a type of virtual copy manager device and provides the facility to transfer data between source and destination volumes. One LAN copy manager instance is automatically created for each MediaAgent at installation time. No detection or configuration is required for the LAN Copy Manager. LAN Copy Manager is used by the Image Level iDataAgent, Image Level Proxyhost iDataAgent, and Quick Recovery Agent.

Quick Recovery Agent

Although the Quick Recovery Agent is optimized for use with a SAN, it may still be used effectively in a more traditional LAN environment. In this case, you will use the LAN copy manager facility to transfer data between source and destination volumes.

For Quick Recovery Agent, the LAN Copy Manager may be selected as the copy manager for a QR Volume when configuring the QR Policy for a subclient. In order to use LAN Copy Manager, the MediaAgent must be installed on the destination client. Both the source and destination LAN Copy Managers will be selectable when creating a QR Policy. The LAN Copy Manager associated with the destination volume should be selected when performing remote copy operations.

When a QR Volume is created or updated using a LAN copy manager, the Quick Recovery Agent client reads block-level data directly from the disk and transmits it to the designated MediaAgent over the LAN. The MediaAgent then writes the received data directly to the destination disk. The source disk may be locally attached to the client, and the destination disk may be locally attached to the MediaAgent. (SAN attached disks may be used with the LAN copy manager, but they will be treated the same way as locally attached disks.)

The LAN copy manager is especially useful for copying volumes to remote sites and thus can function as a WAN copy manager as well.

Image Level iDataAgent

LAN Copy Manager is used to read block-level data directly from the specified volume(s) and transmit it to the designated MediaAgent over the LAN. The MediaAgent then writes the received data directly to the destination. (SAN-attached disks may be used with the LAN Copy Manager, but they will be treated the same way as locally attached disks.)

Image Level ProxyHost iDataAgent

LAN Copy Manager is used to read block-level data directly from the specified volume(s) on the backup host, and if the MediaAgent is installed on the backup host, data can be written directly to an attached library without involving the LAN.
