Microsoft's Data Protection Manager (DPM) product replicates files from multiple production servers to a single, dedicated DPM server. During the data replication, DPM uses Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) to produce snapshots of the data on the protected servers, enabling multiple point-in-time recovery points to be stored on the DPM server.
The iDataAgent for Microsoft Data Protection Manager enables you to selectively back up and/or restore data that resides on the DPM server. To provide flexible data management, the DPM iDataAgent allows backup and/or restoration of data in-place or out-of-place.
The use of default subclient to backup the DPM server is not supported. You need to create a user subclient before you can run a DPM backup. For DPM 2007, a replica is created for every unique volume being protected due to this you need to create a subclient for each replica created. For example, if the DPM server has 25 clients and one volume protected per client, then you should create 25 separate subclients to protect them. |
Because the DPM application stores its metadata in an SQL database, DPM server metadata is not backed up by the Microsoft Data Protection Manager iDataAgent. So in order to fully protect a DPM server — both the DPM metadata and the DPM file system data being backed up — you should use the SQL Server iDataAgent to back up the DPM database that contains the DPM metadata. This will ensure a rapid, direct way to restore and resynchronize the DPM server if it fails.
To fully protect the DPM server and to effectively and efficiently restore it, use the SQL Server iDataAgent to back up the SQL database that contains the DPM metadata. |
The Microsoft Data Protection Manager iDataAgent supports the following data types for backup and restore:
The following screen example displays the levels — Client, Agent, Backup Set, and Subclient — that are automatically created when the Microsoft Data Protection Manager iDataAgent is installed. These levels appear in the CommCell Browser.
