Configure the Lotus Domino Server for Transaction Logging

While the Lotus Notes Database iDataAgent supports all logging styles (disabled, archive, circular, linear) it is strongly recommended that Archive Logging be used; refer to Best Practices for more information. The public name and address book (names.nsf) must be using the R5 or R6 template, in order for the required transaction logging settings to appear.

This procedure should be performed by a Lotus Notes Administrator only.

To configure the Lotus Domino Server for transaction logging:

Using either the Lotus Notes client software or Lotus Domino Administrator, open the server document for your server from the public name and address book database (names.nsf). Edit the document as follows:

  1. Access the Transactional Logging tab.

  2. Change the Transactional Logging field to Enabled.

For optimum server performance, set the Log Path field to a directory on a different disk (physical drive) than where the Lotus Notes databases reside.
  3. Change the Logging Style field to Archived. (Recommended)

  4. Optionally modify the remaining fields on this page to suit your server needs. For information, refer to your Lotus Notes documentation.

  5. Save your changes, and restart the Lotus Domino server.

This task is now complete.

The first time the server starts after these changes are made, it will create the log file and all extents. Depending on the value that you have set for the maximum log space, this may make the server startup take much longer than normal. Subsequent server startups will be normal.
