Overview

The Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent supports the following types of retrieve operations:

• Browse and Retrieve of archived mail messages to a Target mailbox.
• The Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent can retrieve archived mail messages to a PST file.

All retrieves can be performed in-place, out-of-place or cross-application. (See Retrieve Destinations below for comprehensive information.)

For the Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent, retrieve operations can be performed from the client and agent levels in the CommCell Browser.

Retrieving Messages to a Target Mailbox

Retrieve operations are similar to out of place restores of other iDataAgents. Archived messages are retrieved into target mailboxes. You must set up at least one target mailbox before retrieving archived data.

Archived data resides on the storage resources associated with the storage policy for the subclient containing the messages to be retrieved. When retrieving data, the selected archived messages are copied from the archive media into the specified target mailbox. Exchange Compliance Archiver will create a new folder in the target mailbox, annotate and time-stamp it with the retrieval job reference and proceed to deposit all the contents of the retrieval within that folder.

The system provides a powerful set of retrieve options that enable you to specify and recover only the messages you need. In addition to searching for a particular message, the Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent also allows you search by contents if the archive operations were performed with Content Indexing enabled. Furthermore, you can retrieve a sample of the archive data by specifying a sample number when searching archived files.

Job Restarts

You can specify the maximum number of allowed restart attempts and the interval between restart attempts for all data retrieve jobs. For step-by-step instructions, see Specify Job Restartability for the CommCell.

How to Set Up and Run A Retrieve Operation

The following section provides the steps to set up and run a Retrieve Operation:

1. Run an archive operation. See How to Set Up and Run an Archive Operation for step-by-step instructions.
2. Discover and select target mailboxes on an Exchange Server. See Discover and Select Target Mailboxes on the Exchange Server for step-by-step instructions.
3. Find and retrieve data (e.g., files, directories, or objects). See Browse and Retrieve Mail Messages or Find and Retrieve Exchange Objects for step-by-step instructions.

Retrieve Destinations

By default, the Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent retrieves data to the client computer from which it originated; this is referred to as an in-place retrieve. You can also retrieve the data to another client computer in the CommCell. Keep in mind the following considerations when performing such retrieves:

• The destination client must reside in the same CommCell as the client whose data was archived.
• Note that when you perform retrieves other than in-place retrieves, the retrieved data assumes the Exchange permissions that it had originally and the Windows security attributes (permissions) of the parent directory.

In-Place Retrieve

Keep in mind that out-of-place retrieve operations are also subject to the conditions described in Cross-Application Retrieves.

Cross-Application Retrieves

• Support for restoring/recovering/retrieving data from one application version to another generally follows the same compatibility support provided by the associated third-party application vendor, unless otherwise noted.

• The retrieve destination can be the same Target Mailbox, a different Target Mailbox, or a PST file on another Exchange Server within the same organization and site with a compatible Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent installed and operational.

Retrieve Considerations for This Agent

Before performing any retrieve procedures for this agent, review the following information:

• Before retrieving a message, ensure that the storage limits are disabled. Otherwise the storage limit may prevent the entire list of items from being retrieved, even though the retrieve job may report success. Once you have Disabled Storage Limits, you can perform the retrieve operation.
• You will be unable to retrieve archive data if the software has been uninstalled or deconfigured.
• The Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent requires that target mailboxes be configured before archived data can be retrieved. During the retrieval process, the archived data will be retrieved and sent to a target mailbox.
• If you previously added the MAPI32.dll file to the <Software Installation Path>/Base installation directory on the Client to support PST archiving or recoveries to PST, then you will need to remove that file prior to performing a non-PST restore, recover, or retrieve operation for Exchange. Otherwise, such jobs may go into a pending state.
• If you perform a Find and Recover operation from Outlook Add-In, messages will always be appended to the destination path \recovered items.

• If you perform a restore/recovery/retrieve operation using the CommCell Console and the restore/recovery/retrieve destination path is \recovered items, then the Overwrite and Skip restore options will be ignored. Instead, the messages will be appended.
