U7 - Escala Update of AIX 6.1 to 6.1.2.2 (TL 6100-02-02)

Document Release 2.2 (20/05/2009)

Preliminary Remarks

https://support.bull.com/ols/product/system/aix/fix/packs/ml/

Attention: Pour cette mise à jour d'AIX, il est nécessaire de mettre à jour également les "Bullenh (Bull Enhancements)".

This document describes the procedure to follow when updating an already existing AIX 6.1 system. The Latest Technical Level delivered by BULL is 6.1.2.2 (according to the bos.mp fileset Level number). So, Technology Level 02, Service Pack 2 (6100-02-02-0849).

Warning : updating a system to a lower modification level is not supported (which is possible even when updating to a higher Technology Level)

So, before updating the system, please check the date of the level (run oslevel -s). If the oslevel date is at a level less or equal to 0849, no problem. If the oslevel date is more than 0849 (for example 6100-00-08-909 or 6100-01-04-0909) you will have to install a more recent Service Pack than the SP2 if you want to update to the TL2 level.

To know the last available Service Packs, please go to :

https://support.bull.com/ols/product/system/aix/fix/packs/ml/

Warning: For this AIX update procedure, it is mandatory to also update the "Bullenh (Bull Enhancements)" product.

Procedure Contents

U7.1 - Media and SRB

  • CDROM or DVD: AIX Version 6.1 TL2 Updates (76742407-001) (3 volumes) or (76742407-101 ) for the DVD
  • CDROM : Servive Pack 2 for AIX 6.1 TL2 (76742471-001)
  • CDROM: Bullenh 610-4 (76742409-001)
  • SRB (Software Release Bulletin): AIX V6.1 TL2 SP2 & Bull Enhancement 610-4 (86 A2 62EJ Rev.06)

U7.2 - Cluster Node Update

If the server to be updated is a cluster node, please refer to the HACMP Upgrade procedures at the High Availability Products for AIX WEB site (Bull internal access only), to see if you need to install HA PTFs.

You have to stop HACMP with takeover option on that node, using the smit clstop command, before AIX update.

U7.3 - Precautions

  • In any case, perform a bootable backup of your configuration (rootvg) and save other Volume Groups.
  • To check if some efixes were installed on this system, run :
emgr -l
If you get some, you have to check that the APARs corrected by the efixes are corrected too by the new AIX Release you are going to install, otherwise new efixes will be needed after AIX update. Please call the Support representative for help.
  • It is strongly recommended to run the system in single user mode:
    • Replace the following /etc/inittab line:
      init:2:initdefault:
      with
      init:s:initdefault:
    • If your system resides on a Fiber Disk, do not reboot now, otherwise reboot the system, using:
      shutdown -Fr

U7.4 - Fibre Channel Disk Subsystems Preparation

  • If your system does not include Fibre Channel Disk Sub-systems, just ignore this section.
  • If your system includes Fibre Channel NDAS CX200/300/400/500/600/700 and (or) EMC Symmetrix Sub-systems, check the flare and base software release at the EMC CLARiiON Storage Subsystems WEB site (for Bull employees only). You can, at this point:
    • update the DAS flares
    • update Navisphere 6 to the latest level
    • update Powerpath to the latest level
  • If your system resides on a fibre disk (rootvg on an hdiskpower device)
    • if you need to update Powerpath, perform the following :

      • stop all the applications, umount the filesystems and varyoff the VGs which reside on hdiskpower devices
      • stop navisphere : rc.agent stop
      • check on which hdiskpower device is rootvg : lspv |grep rootvg
      • let's suppose that rootvg is on hdiskpower<x>, then verify that rootvg hdisk is on the default SP : powermt display dev=hdiskpower<x>
you must get the following :
        Owner : default=SP <y> , current = SP <y>
      • run then : pprootdev fix
      • run : bootlist -m normal -o and check that the first hdisk in the list is affected to the current SP
      • unconfigure Powerpath : powermt remove dev=all
      • remove Powerpath software : installp -u EMCpower.*
      • install the last Powerpath release using : smit install_latest
      • restart navisphere : rc.agent start
      • configure Powerpath : powermt config

    • if you don't need to update Powerpath, run :

      pprootdev fix

U7.5 - Disk Subsystems

If your system does not include disk subsystems, just ignore this section.
If your system includes disk subsystems, all activity must be stopped: this is OK, since you are running in single user mode.

U7.6 - Install AIX updates using "AIX 6.1 Updates" CD-ROM

  • If the Hypertext Library (Bull documentation for AIX/Escala) is installed, please remove it before updating AIX. You can reinstall it after the AIX update. To remove the Hypertext Library, run:
    cd /
    /etc/hypercd/install -u
  • To be able to install the Updates CD-ROM, perform the following commands:
    mount /opt
    srcmstr &
    /etc/methods/cfg64 &
    /usr/sbin/cron &
  • Please, note the current AIX 6.1 oslevel before update, running :
oslevel -s
  • To install the updates, insert the "AIX 6.1 Updates" CD-ROM then run:
    smit update_all
In the SMIT menu, select the options as below and run the update:
    INPUT device/directory for software: [/dev/cd0]
    SOFTWARE to update [ update_all ]
    ACCEPT new license agreements? yes
  • If the oslevel before updating was less than 6.1.1.0, the result of the previous command may fail because of the following filesets :
    • devices.pciex.8680c71014108003.diag : you will have to run the "smit update_all" command once more.

    • ICU4C.rte : please download the fileset ICU4C.rte 6.1.2.0 , put it in the /usr/sys/inst.images directory and install it using the smit install_latest command.

  • update then to SP2, using the Service Pack 2 for AIX 6.1 TL02 CD-ROM, run :
smit update_all
In the SMIT menu, select the options as below and run the update:
INPUT device/directory for software: [/dev/cd0]
SOFTWARE to update [ update_all ]
ACCEPT new license agreements? yes
  • As explained in the Preliminary Remarks section, you may need to install a more recent Service Pack, so first download it from :
https://support.bull.com/ols/product/system/aix/fix/packs/ml/
then install the Service Pack running :
smit update_all

  • If you get the following message at the end of the update process:
    ***** ATTENTION *****
The boot image you just created might fail to boot because
the size exceeds the system limit. For information about
    fixes or workarounds, see /usr/lpp/bos.sysmgt/README.

your system may not boot, depending on your machine model:

    • If your machine model is one of the following Escala models: PL240 / PL420 / PL820 / PL1600 / PL3200, then the firmware of the machine must be set at the latest level to be able to boot. Check the firmware at:

      http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/mdownload/download.html

and do not worry if you still get the same warning message, running the bosboot command after rebooting your system.
    • no problem to boot on Power5, Power5+ and Power6 platforms

U7.7 - Install the Bull Enhancement

  • If you use RSF (Remote Services Facilities), you must create a directory as follows to preserve the RSF configuration:
    mkdir /tmp/rsf.rsflite.upd.sv
  • Insert the Bull Enhancement CD-ROM and run:
    smit install_latest
    Select:
    INPUT device/directory for software : [/dev/cd0]
    and install all the filesets.

The installation will fail because of the EMC.AIX package. The requisite failure message related to the EMC.Symmetrix.ha.rte and EMC.CLARiiON.ha.rte filesets is normal since you do not have any High Availability software installed on your machine.

Please refer to section Install From Scratch: New and Complete Overwrite / Install Bull Enhancement Packages of the SRB AIX V6.1 TL2 SP2 & Bull Enhancement 610-4 (86 A2 62EJ Rev.06).

U7.8 - Reboot the system

  • If you use NIS, it is strongly recommended to remove the bos.net.nisplus fileset.
  • Before rebooting, restore the multi-user mode by replacing in /etc/inittab the line:
    init:s:initdefault:
    with
    init:2:initdefault:
  • If you had to run the pprootdev off command to update Powerpath on a Fiber Disk system (see U6.4 section), run now:

    pprootdev on
  • Reboot now the system, by running:
    shutdown -Fr
  • It is recommended to perform a backup of the system (using the smit mksysb command).

U7.9 - Tasks to perform after the update

  • If this update is performed within a HACMP cluster, restart HA using the smit clstart command, and update the other cluster node(s).
  • Otherwise, you can now perform the varyonvg command on the de-activated Volume Groups, then mount the filesystems back.
  • Run:
    oslevel -s
if you don't get 6100-02-02-0849, run oslevel -sl 6100-02-02-0849 to get the filesets which cause the AIX level to be wrong. If you don't use these filesets, just remove them (installp -u <Fileset>), otherwise call your support representative.
