PrKB12074 : Migrate from RHEL 4 to 5

This article describes how to the AS/ES/WS and Desktop RHEL 4 subscriptions translate to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES
Red Hat Enterprise Linux (1-2 socket)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform

Note: As a reminder, one of the values of a Red Hat subscription is that fact that you are never forced to upgrade. A Red Hat subscription gives you the right to upgrade/downgrade to any supported version at any time. This allows you the flexibility to run the Red Hat Enterprise Linux version that provides you the most value.

The previous AS or ES subscription allows to immediately take advantage of all the new features and functionality of Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5. This includes the ability to use Red Hat's new virtualization capabilities to run up to four simultaneous guests on a single server.

  • For an ES subscription, the customer has automatically been transitioned to Red Hat Enterprise Linux as depicted in the diagram above.
  • For an AS subscription, the customer will be transitioned to the full capabilities contained in the new Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform when it renews its subscription. However, it has immediate access to all the new features of Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5 right now. It also has the ability to run up to four virtual guests on a single server.
