This agent has the following unique functionality and options for protecting Data Protection Manager File System data:
VSS is used automatically as part of the Microsoft Data Protection Manager iDataAgent backup process. You do not have the option to eliminate VSS use.
This option allows you to prevent the file access time from being changed for Windows/Unix/Macintosh File System iDataAgents as a result of running data protection operations on the client. When this option is selected, the file access time will be preserved. See Preserve the File Access Time for step-by-step instructions.
Before performing any backup procedures for this agent, review the following information:
To avoid duplicate backup of Windows File System data when using the Data Protection Manager iDataAgent, filter out Data Protection Manager data from Windows File System backups. One way to do this is to clear the Follow Mount Points check box in the Advanced Backup Options Data tab for the Windows File System iDataAgent.
When backing up large files and/or system volumes, the Windows memory pool resources may run low and the backup may fail with errors reported in the Windows Event Viewer and the iDataAgent logs. In this case, it is recommended that you review the Microsoft documentation for increasing the maximum memory pool usage and paged memory pool size.
In order to fully restore the DPM server, you must back up both the File System data using this iDataAgent and the SQL database that stores the DPM metadata. You can restore this database with the SQL server iDataAgent.
The use of default subclient to backup the DPM server is not supported. You need to create a user subclient before you can run a DPM backup. For DPM 2007, a replica is created for every unique volume being protected due to this you need to create a subclient for each replica created. For example, if the DPM server has 25 clients and one volume protected per client, then you should create 25 separate subclients to protect them.
