As Virtual Server instances reference virtual server software, you must create a Virtual Server instance for each type of virtual server software that you want to back up. See Instances for an overview of Instances.
Once installed, you must configure an instance for the agent. You can view the instance configuration from the Instance Properties dialog box; however, only User Security settings can be changed once the instance is configured. If a previously configured instance no longer meets the needs for which it was intended, a new instance can be created to accommodate the desired configuration. See Create/Modify an Instance for step-by-step instructions on configuring new or existing instances.

Each instance must be dedicated to one of the following virtual server software types:
Once configured, the virtual server software associated with the instance cannot be changed.
When configured for VMware, the instance must be further configured for the VMware components that will be backed up, which can include either:
Once configured, the VMware component associated with the instance cannot be changed.
When configured for Microsoft Virtual Server/Hyper-V, no further configuration is required for the instance with the exception of any User Security settings that are desired.
