Things to Consider when Creating and Configuring Compliance Archiver Subclients
The following table shows subclient creation and configuration details specific to the Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent.
Agent |
Type of Data | Default Subclient created during install of the Agent | Supports Default Subclient | Supports User Defined Subclient | Contents of the default subclient when user-defined subclient is present | Other Types of subclients supported by the Agent | Notes |
Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent | Exchange message journal mailboxes* | No | No | Yes | N/A | Do Not Archive | * If you have enabled discovery of all mailboxes, you can add non-journal mailboxes to subclient content. See Archive All Mailboxes for more information. |
The Exchange Compliance Archiver Agent is designed to archive all incoming and outgoing messages and attachments in each Mailbox Store on an Exchange Server. Subclient content for this agent typically consists of Journal Mailboxes, but may include non-journaling mailboxes during the initial load of content. After installing this agent, a user-defined subclient must be manually created and content defined. There are two scenarios for initially defining the subclient content for this agent:
Once content has been added to the user-defined subclient, the subclient content for this agent is displayed similar to the following example:
Display Name | Alias Name | SMTP Address |
Journal MB01 | exchJournalMB01 | exchJournalMB01@exch.company.com |
Journal MB02 | exchJournalMB02 | exchJournalMB02@exch.company.com |
Journal MB03 | exchJournalMB03 | exchJournalMB03@exch.company.com |
Note that in the above example there are three Journal Mailboxes specified as subclient content, each one associated to a corresponding Mailbox Store on the Exchange Server. Since there are only three Journal Mailboxes to be archived, there may be no need to distribute them across different user-defined subclients. However, in cases where there is a high-volume of messages being sent, or when there are many Mailbox Stores that require numerous Journal Mailboxes then it may be necessary to create additional user-defined subclients to further divide the content.
Since there is a one-to-one correspondence between each Mailbox Store and a Journal Mailbox, you can divide content for this agent so that each subclient contains its own Journal Mailbox. In the example below, the three Journal Mailboxes are assigned to different subclients:
Journal MB01 | exchJournalMB01 | exchJournalMB01@exch.company.com |
Journal MB02 | exchJournalMB02 | exchJournalMB02@exch.company.com |
Journal MB03 | exchJournalMB03 | exchJournalMB03@exch.company.com |
Dividing the client data using subclients in this way can help you better manage compliance archiving operations by distributing the workload on the Exchange Server into logical groupings.
Subclient-level Archive Filters and CommCell-level Global Filters are available for this agent to exclude specified mailbox folders, or folder patterns (using wildcards), from being archived. For example, you can filter out the Junk E-mail and Spam folders during an initial load of non-journaling mailbox content so that messages within those folders do not get archived. Subclient-level Archive Filters provide exclusion capabilities on a per-subclient basis, whereas Global Filters allow you to filter out data from data protection operations on all agents of a certain type within a CommCell. For more information, see Filters.
Wildcards and regular expressions are supported by this agent in the following functions:
Subclient Filters/Global Filters
Wildcards can be used in the Exclude the folders that contain the following patterns field when filtering data using Subclient-level Archive Filters and/or CommCell-level Global Filters.
For a list of wildcards supported by this agent, see Wildcards.

Once installed, the agent is configured and is therefore able to manage the data or volumes on the client computer. However, you can change certain aspects of the subclient configuration to manage the data in the manner that best suits your needs.
You can view or change the subclient configuration from the Subclient Properties dialog box. The following information can be configured.
You can enable or disable all operations for this CommCell object and all objects below it. For more information, see Activity Control.
You can define the content of the subclient. Most agents include a configure button that displays a dialog where you can add or modify the data included as subclient content. For step-by-step instructions, see Configure Subclient Content.
For more information, see Subclient Content.
You can specify the interval for index creation for archive operations on this subclient. Note that this setting can be overridden by selecting the Create New Index option on the Advanced Backup/Archive Options (Data) tab. If overridden, the new index interval counter will start again at zero.
Several configurable options to efficiently use available resources for transferring data secured by data protection operations are provided in the subclient. This includes the following:
You can enable or disable the encryption of data for transmission over unsecure networks and for storage on media. For more information, see Data Encryption.
You can view the data paths associated with the primary storage policy copy of the selected storage policy or incremental storage policy. You can also modify the data paths for the subclient including their priority. For additional information, see Configuring Alternate Data Paths for Subclients.
You can perform the following functions:
You can enable or disable Global Filters. For more information, see Global Filters.
You can add, modify or view Pre/Post processes for the subclient. These are batch files or shell scripts that you can run before or after certain job phases. For more information, see Pre/Post Processes.
You can associate the subclient to a storage policy. For more information, see Storage Policies.
You can rename a user-defined subclient.
You can define an account with permissions to execute Pre/Post commands for the agent's archive, backup, or volume creation jobs.
See the Exchange Agents: Other User Accounts section in User Accounts and Passwords for more information.
