All unconfigured mailboxes are assigned to the default subclient during the backup/migration
archiving/content indexing operation (if no other subclients are present or new items are present). You can however,
reassign any item to any other subclient within the same backup set, archive set,
content index set. Once
assigned it becomes part of the content of that subclient.
Before You Begin
- Do not reassign content to another subclient while either subclient is
being backed up/archived/content indexed.
Required Capability: See
Capabilities and Permitted Actions
To assign items to another
subclient:
- From the CommCell Browser, right-click the backup set, archive set, or
content index set
containing the subclients for which you want to
assign mailboxes, select All Tasks and then click Configure. Alternatively,
you can perform this using the Subclient Properties
(Content) tab.
- From the Add/Modify Mailbox in Backup Set
(Exchange Mailbox) or the
Re-distribute mailboxes among
subclients (Exchange Mailbox Archiver) dialog box, click the Subclient field of each item that you want to assign and select the
desired subclient from the list. Alternatively, you can select and assign a range of items
using the Assign all selected items to list.
Regardless of the
assignment method, your choices always include:
- The default subclient
- Any user-defined subclients
- The Do Not Backup/Do Not Archive/Do Not Content Index subclient
If you choose the Do Not Backup/Do Not Archive/Do Not Content Index subclient, the item will not be
backed up/archived/content indexed.
- To save the configuration, click OK.
Before You Begin
- Disabled mailboxes cannot be backed up or archived unless the nBackupDisabledMailBoxes registry key is configured on the Exchange client.
Required Capability: See
Capabilities and Permitted Actions
To
manually discover and assign new
mailboxes:
- From the CommCell Browser, right-click the backup set, archive set,
content index set of the subclients that you want to
assign mailboxes, select All Tasks and then click Configure. Alternatively,
you can use the Subclient Properties (Content) tab to access its Configure
button.
- From the Add/Modify Mailbox in Backup Set or the
Re-distribute mailboxes among
subclients dialog box, depending on your agent, click the
Discover button.
- The system displays a confirmation message, informing you that the
discovery process can take an unspecified amount of time. Larger Exchange
Servers may require several minutes for this operation to complete. Click
No if you need to cancel the discovery process, or click Yes to
continue. If you continue the discovery process, a progress bar shows the
completion status of the operation.
- When the discovery process completes, the Add/Modify Mailbox in Backup
Set or the Re-distribute mailboxes among subclients dialog box is redisplayed. The window displays the mailboxes
that have already been assigned; plus any newly discovered mailboxes that have
not been assigned. The unassigned mailboxes are those that have no entry in
the Subclient column.
- To assign these mailboxes, click the Subclient field of each mailbox that
you want to assign and select the desired subclient from the list.
Alternatively, you can select and assign a range of mailboxes to a single
subclient using the Change all selected mailboxes to list.
Regardless of the assignment method, your choices always include:
- The default subclient
- Any user-defined subclients
- The Do Not Backup/Do Not Archive/Do Not Content Index subclient
If you choose the Do Not Backup/Do Not Archive/Do Not Content Index subclient, the mailbox will
not be backed up/archived/content indexed.
- To register your mailbox assignments with the system, click Apply.
- If you have no other mailboxes to assign, click OK.
Before You Begin
- Review Discovering and Assigning New Mailboxes
for additional information.
- Do not configure mailboxes for auto-discovery while the subclient or its parent node is being backed up/migrated/content
indexed.
- Disabled mailboxes cannot be backed up, migrated, or archived unless the
nBackupDisabledMailBoxes registry key is configured on the Exchange 2000/2003 client.
Note that mailboxes marked as disabled in Exchange Server 2007 are
disconnected by default and therefore cannot be discovered, archived or
backed up.
- In order to configure auto-discovery of mailboxes by Active Directory User Group Affinity in cases where the CommServe and the Active Directory Server are across a firewall, ensure that port 389 is opened.
Required Capability: See Capabilities and Permitted Actions
Select the desired procedure:
To Configure Mailboxes for Auto-Discovery using Regular Expressions:
- From the CommCell Browser, right-click the backup set, content index set or All Subclients migration set containing the mailboxes that you want to configure for auto-discovery, then click Properties.
- Click on the Auto Discover tab, then select Enable Auto-Discover and select Match mailboxes by regular expressions. Click OK to save the changes.
- If you would like to enable auto-discovery on the default subclient, then continue on with this step, otherwise skip to Step 5. Right-click the default subclient of the backup set,
content index set or All Subclients migration set, then click Properties.
- Click on the Auto-discovery tab, then select Automatically add new mailboxes that don't qualify for membership in any of the sub-clients and click OK to save the change.
- Right-click a user-defined subclient of the backup set,

Click Add. Repeat this step to enter additional wildcard patterns. See Wildcards for a list of supported wildcards.
- Click OK to save the changes.
- If there are other user-defined subclients contained within this backup set,
content index set, or All Subclients migration set, repeat steps 5 through 7 for each of the other user-defined subclients, specifying a unique set of wildcard patterns for each subclient.
The next time a backup, content indexing, or migration is run for the selected backup set,
content index set, or All Subclients migration set, any newly discovered mailboxes will be assigned to the content of the respective subclient whose name patterns match the specified name pattern of the new mailboxes. Any newly discovered mailboxes that do not match any of the name patterns will be assigned to the default subclient.
To Configure Mailbox Stores for Auto-Discovery using Storage Group Affinity:
- From the CommCell Browser, right-click the backup set, content index
set, or All Subclients migration set containing the Mailbox Stores that you want to configure for auto-discovery, then click Properties.

- Right-click a user-defined subclient of the backup set,
content index set, or All Subclients migration set, then click Properties.
- Click on the Auto-discovery tab, then click Configuration.
- From the Configure Mailbox Stores for Auto-discovery dialog, click the Subclient field of each Mailbox Store that you want to assign and select the desired subclient from the list. Alternatively, you can select and assign a range of Mailbox Stores to a single subclient using the Change all selected stores to list. Click OK to save the assignments.
- Click OK to save the changes.
The next time a backup, content indexing, or migration is run for the selected backup set,
content index set, or All Subclients migration set, any newly discovered mailboxes found within the Storage Group associated with a given subclient, will be assigned to the content of that subclient. Any newly discovered mailboxes in new Mailbox Stores that are not assigned to any subclient will be assigned to the default subclient.
To Configure Active Directory User Groups for Auto-Discovery:
- From the CommCell Browser, right-click the backup set, content index
set, or All Subclients migration set containing the subclients that you want to configure for auto-discovery, then click Properties.

The manual discovery process will begin, and will populate the Configure AD User Group for Auto-discovery dialog with the new groups if any are found.
- Click the Subclient field of each Active Directory User Group that you want to assign and select the desired subclient from the list. Alternatively, you can select and assign a range of Active Directory User Groups to a single subclient using the Move all selected items to list.
- Once you have assigned all the groups, click OK to save the assignments on the Configure AD User Group for Auto-discovery dialog.
- Click OK to save the changes on the Auto-discovery tab.
The next time a backup, content indexing, or migration is run for the selected backup set,
content index set, or All Subclients migration set, any newly discovered mailboxes found within the Active Directory User Group associated with a given subclient, will be assigned to the content of that subclient. Any newly discovered mailboxes in new Active Directory User Groups that are not assigned to any subclient will be assigned to the default subclient.
To Disable Auto-Discovery for the Backup Set or All Subclients Migration Set:
- From the CommCell Browser, right-click the backup set, content index
