Getting Started - CommServe

Prerequisites

The CommServe is the core component of your CommCell® - review the following before installing the CommServe:

Quick Start

The following diagram illustrates the sequence of operations for getting started with the CommServe.

Where to go From Here

  1. Get familiar with CommCell Console. The CommCell Console is the graphical user interface that allows you to control and manage a CommCell. See CommCell Console for more information.
  2. Activate the license. If the CommServe was installed using an evaluation license, make sure to activate the license. See Update Licenses for step-by-step instructions.
  3. Configure your CommCell using the following key features:

    Administration

    Data Aging

Data Aging is the removal of data from media and is based on the retention rules for aging data. By default, the retention rules are set to infinite. You can define retention rules based on the storage requirements of your organization.

See Data Aging for more information.

    Storage Policy

Storage policies act as the primary channels through which data is included in data protection and data recovery operations. Its chief function is to map data from its original location to a physical media. There are two types of storage policies: a standard iDataAgent Backup Storage Policy or a Disaster Recovery Backup Storage Policy. The system provides a default iDataAgent storage policy for each media library, stand-alone, or disk drive once they are configured.

See Storage Policies for more information.

    Disaster Recovery Backup

The software stores all information for the CommCell in a SQL database and in the Windows registries, which is critical for retrieval in the case of a disaster or system failure. This metadata and Windows registry data are backed up during a Disaster Recovery Backup. This data can be browsed and then restored using the CommServe Disaster Recovery Tool.

See Disaster Recovery Backup for more information.

    Auxiliary Copy

Auxiliary copy allows you to create secondary copies of data. By default data is stored in the primary copy. You can make copies of the data based on the storage requirements of your organization.

See Auxiliary Copy for more information.

    User Administration and Security

Users have access to the resources and features of the CommCell based on several factors, including their user group association and its defined permissions. By default, the administrator user has access to all components in the CommCell.

See User Administration and Security for more information.

    Scheduling and Schedule Policy

Scheduling jobs within the CommCell ensures that the jobs in the CommCell are automatically performed on a regular basis without user intervention.

    See Scheduling for more information.

Schedule policies allow you to associate a schedule or groups of schedules to any number of supported items within your CommCell.

See Schedule Policy for more information.

    License Administration

Every component in the system (MediaAgents, libraries, and agents), and certain CommCell features, require a product license or feature license for use.

See License Administration for more information.

    Alerts and Monitoring

Alerts can inform you of conditions occurring within a CommCell that you may have otherwise not been aware of. These conditions can range from minor occurrences that do not require intervention to severe occurrences that need immediate intervention. Alerts can be configured globally or they can be job-based.

See Alerts and Monitoring for more information.

    Additional features

The CommServe includes a host of features that can be used to customize the data protection and other operations in your environment. For a comprehensive list of all features available, expand the Administration, Management, Storage Management, Monitoring, and Operations options in the table of contents displayed on the left pane.

Plan Your Disaster Recovery

Before setting up the CommCell, be sure to review and understand the setup needed to plan a disaster recovery strategy for your environment.

The Disaster Recovery web provides links to disaster recovery considerations and procedures for all components in the CommCell. Specifically, be sure to review CommCell Planning and Recovery and CommServe Recovery.
