U5.2 - Cluster Node Update
If the server to be updated is a cluster node, please refer to the FAQ about Powercluster and HA Technical Levels (http://epicentre.frec.bull.fr/internal/topics/HA/FAQS/faq_ha_level.html, Bull internal access only), to see if you need to install HA PTFs.
You have to stop HACMP with takeover option on that node, using the smit clstop
command, before AIX update.
U5.3 - Precautions
- In any case, perform a bootable backup of your configuration (rootvg) and save other Volume Groups.
- To check if some efixes were installed on this system, run :
emgr -lIf you get some, you have to check that the APARs corrected by the efixes are corrected too by the new AIX Release you are going to install, otherwise new efixes will be needed after AIX update. Please call the Support representative for help.
- It is strongly recommended to run the system in single user mode:
- Replace the following
/etc/inittab
line:
init:2:initdefault:
with
init:s:initdefault: - If your system resides on a Fiber Disk, do not reboot now, otherwise reboot the system, using:
shutdown -Fr
- Replace the following
U5.4 - Fibre Channel Disks Subsystems Preparation
If your system does not include Fibre Channel Disk Subsystems, skip to the next section.
If your system includes a Fibre Channel DAS disk subsystem such as DAS 5300, DAS 4500, DAS 4700, NDAS CX200/400/600 and (or) EMC Symmetrix subsystems, special instructions apply, as explained below.
- If you are already running EMC.AIX 5.1 at least (see the level of the
EMC.symmetrix.aix.rte
fileset), check the flare and base software release at the EMC CLARiiON Storage Subsystems WEB site (for Bull employees only). You can, at this point:- update the DAS flares
- update Navisphere 6 to the latest level
- update Powerpath to the latest level, knowing that:
- If you keep on using the CLARRAYS3 software, you must keep on running the Powerpath 3.0 Release (last level: 3.0.4.2)
- Powerpath 4.2 at least is mandatory for EMC.AIX 5.2. You can download Powerpath 4.2 and its documentation, from http://epicentre.frec.bull.fr/internal/topics/storage/das/r14set34.html (for Bull employees only).
Contact your Bull representative to get the media required for these updates. The updates are described in different sections of the following procedure: MS4 : Migration guide from an Aix5.1/Aix5.2 + PowerPath environment
- If your system resides on a fibre disk (rootvg on an hdiskpower device)
-
if you need to update Powerpath, perform the following :
- stop all the applications, umount the filesystems and varyoff the VGs which reside on hdiskpower devices
- stop navisphere :
rc.agent stop
- check on which hdiskpower device is rootvg :
lspv |grep rootvg
- let's suppose that rootvg is on hdiskpower<x>, then verify that rootvg hdisk is on the default SP :
powermt display dev=hdiskpower<x>
you must get the following :
Owner : default=SP <y> , current = SP <y> - run then :
pprootdev off
- reboot the system so that the rootvg volumes are no more on hdiskpower devices
- unconfigure Powerpath :
powermt remove dev=all
- remove Powerpath software :
installp -u EMCpower.*
- install the last Powerpath release using :
smit install_latest
- restart navisphere :
rc.agent start
- configure Powerpath :
powermt config
-
if you don't need to update Powerpath, run:
pprootdev fix
-
- If you are not running EMC.AIX 5.1 at least:
- if your system resides on a Fibre Disk, please follow now the MS5: Migration guide from an AIX5.1/AIX5.2 + PowerPath environment, for a system booting on a Fibre Channel device procedure. You do not need the U5 procedure anymore.
- if your system does not reside on Fibre Disk, you will have to execute some sections of the following procedure: MS4: Migration guide from an AIX5.1/AIX5.2 + PowerPath environment all along the AIX migration. At this point, go to the DAS preparation section of MS4.
- you must backup the VGs located on the DAS 4500 and 5300 Sub-systems since these DAS are no more supported.
- If you need to migrate to the EMC.AIX software, go now to section: "Existing components migration" of the MS4 Guide.
- If the Hypertext Library is installed, please remove it before updating AIX , otherwise the sysmgt.websm.framework fileset installation willfail. You can reinstall it after the AIX update.
To remove the Hypertext Library, run:
cd /; /etc/hypercd/install -u
- To be able to install the Updates CD-ROM, perform the following commands :
- Insert the "AIX 5.2 Updates" CD-ROM Vol.1, or DVD, then run:
smit update_all
select:
INPUT device/directory for software: [/dev/cd0]
SOFTWARE to update [ _update_all ]
ACCEPT new license agreements? yes
Warning: If you are using the CDROMs, it could be necessary to insert the requested Update CD-ROM during the installation processing.- If the install result is "Failed" because of some missing requisite filesets, please install those requisites from the AIX 5L for Power V5.2 CDs, then re-run the
smit update_all
command using the AIX 5L V5.2 Updates CDs. - One known problem concerns the devices.pci.3310e000.rte fileset which cannot be installed because of the missing devices.common.IBM.usb.rte requisite fileset. In that case, insert the AIX 5L for Power V5.2 Vol.1 CD and run the following commands:
smit install_all
and select:csm.msg.EN_US
then:
smit install_latest
and select:
devices.common.IBM.usb.rte
then insert the AIX Updates CD and re-run :
smit update_all
and yetACCEPT new license agreements
- Another known problem concerns update of Java14.sdk which may fail. In that case, run the smit update_all command using the AIX 5L for Power V5.2 base CDs, then re-run the
smit update_all
command using the AIX 5L V5.2 Updates CDs. - If you get the following message at the end of the update process:
***** ATTENTION ****
The boot image you just created might fail to boot because
the size exceeds the system limit. For information about
fixes or workarounds, see /usr/lpp/bos.sysmgt/README.your system may not boot according to your machine model:
- if your machine is any Power5 or Power5+ model, you will have no problem to boot
- if your machine model is one of the following : PL220 / PL240 / PL420 / PL820 / PL1600 / PL3200, the firmware of the machine must be set at the latest level.to be able to boot. Check the firmware at: http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/mdownload/download.html and do not worry if you still get the same warning message, running the bosboot command after rebooting your system.
- On other models, it is strongly recommended to remove some not used filesets from the system that would result in a smaller boot image (<12 MB), for example some Graphic adapters filesets (run
lslpp -l |grep -i graph
). If you cannot remove any fileset, you will have to access the firmware command line prompt (OK prompt), which usually appears as an option in the SMS menus, each time you reboot the system (not very convenient...). That means that you will have to type the following two commands, at thefirmware command line prompt :setenv real-base 1000000
reset-all
each time you need to boot your system.
- If the install result is "Failed" because of some missing requisite filesets, please install those requisites from the AIX 5L for Power V5.2 CDs, then re-run the
- If you intend to add a CX 300/500/700/3-XX to your system, go now to the section "Fibre Channel and DAS software installation" of the MS4 Guide.
- In any other case, run:
smit install_latest
select:
INPUT device/directory for software : [/dev/cd0]
and install all the filesets. - if you use NIS, it is strongly recommended to remove the
bos.net.nisplus
fileset - Before rebooting, restore the multi-user mode in /etc/inittab file, replacing:
"init:s:initdefault:"
by"init:2:initdefault:"
- If you had to run the pprootdev off command to update Powerpath on a Fiber Disk system (see U5.4 section), run now:
pprootdev on
- Reboot now the system, running:
shutdown -Fr
- If this update is performed within a HACMP cluster, restart HA using the
smit clstart
command, and update the other node. - Otherwise, you can now perform the
varyonvg
command on the de-activated Volume Groups, thenmount
the filesystems back. - Run:
oslevel -s
If you do not obtain 5200-10-01 as the result, run
oslevel -sl 5200-10-01
to get the filesets which cause the AIX level to be wrong. If you don't use these filesets, just remove them usinginstallp -u <Fileset>
, otherwise call your support representative. -
If you are not running EMC.AIX 5.1 at least:
- if your system resides on a Fibre Disk, please follow now the MS5 : Migration guide from an Aix5.1/Aix5.2 + PowerPath environment, for a system booting on a Fibre Channel device procedure. You do not need the U5 procedure anymore.
- if your system does not reside on Fibre Disk, you will have to execute some sections of the following procedure: MS4 : Migration guide from an Aix5.1/Aix5.2 + PowerPath environment all along the AIX migration. At this point, go to the DAS preparation section of MS4.
U5.5 - Bull SAN Manager (S@NIT!)
The S@NIT! product is no more supported. It is recommended to remove the san_it filesets.
U5.6 - Disk Subsystems
If your system does not include Disk Subsystems, just ignore this section.
If your system includes Disk Sub-systems, all activity is stopped on the Disks since you are running the single user mode.
If your system includes Fibre Channel DAS as DAS 5300, DAS 4500, DAS 4700, NDAS CX200/400/600 and (or) EMC Symmetrix Subsystems :
U5.7 - Install AIX updates using "AIX 5.2 Updates" CD-ROM
mount /opt
srcmstr &
/etc/methods/cfg64 &
/usr/sbin/cron &
U5.8 - Install the Bull Enhancement
If your configuration includes DAS Subsystems or NDAS (CX600, CX400...) Subsystems, read carefully section "PART 3, "AS and NDAS CX Subsystems" of the AIX SRB.
The installation will fail because of the EMC.AIX package. The requisite failure message relating to the EMC.Symmetrix.ha.rte and EMC.CLARiiON.ha.rte filesets is normal since you do not have any High Availability software installed on your machine.
Please look at the Install From Scratch : New and Complete Overwrite
/ Install Bull Enhancement Packages
section of the AIX 5L for POWER Version 5.2 & Bull Enhancement 520_16 (86 A2 00EJ Rev.28) SRB
For all that concerns the Navisphere 6.x product, it is strongly recommended to read the AIX SRB PART 3, "Navisphere 6.x"
U5.9 - Reboot the system
U5.10 - Perform DAS with PowerPath installation (IBM Fibre Channel driver)
If you are using the MS4 Guide to migrate your storage environment, go now to section "New components installation".
U5.11- After updating tasks
(End of procedure)
