Uninstall Components from a Windows Computer

Before You Begin

To uninstall components from a Windows computer:

  1. Log on to the client computer as local Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group on that computer.
  2. Open the Add/Remove Programs icon in the system’s Control Panel.

For Windows Vista, click Uninstall a Program under Programs in the Control Panel.

  3. Select the component to be uninstalled and then click Remove.
    • If you are uninstalling components from a Microsoft Windows Vista or Microsoft Windows Server 2008 platform, a message is displayed asking if you would like to stop services prior to continuing the uninstall. Select Do Not Close Applications if this message appears.
    • If you are uninstalling from a computer that uses Multi Instancing, you will see the Instance number to which each component was installed; be sure to select the correct instance of the component you want to remove.
    • If you are uninstalling Workstation Backup Agent, note that the uninstallation will proceed silently. So perform the following before uninstalling the agent:
      • Ensure that there are no active jobs for this agent.
      • Delete the Replication Set.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.
    • If you are uninstalling the CommCell Explorer, this step completes the uninstall process.
    • If you are uninstalling the CommServe, observe the following:
      • Make sure all other platforms are uninstalled before continuing.
      • You will need to provide the SQL password for the System Administrator account before continuing.
  5. Select the desired language and click Next to continue.

If you are not uninstalling a MediaAgent, skip to Step 8.

  6. Click Yes to delete any configured storage policies.
When you uninstall a MediaAgent without deleting a Storage Policy, you can re-install the MediaAgent in a new directory or on a new computer without losing the data.
  7. Type Confirm to confirm the removal of the MediaAgent software and then click OK.
  8. Click Yes to delete the folder containing your log files, job control files and program files.
  9. Click Yes to delete the install folder.
You will be prompted to delete the install folder only if the component you are uninstalling is the last component remaining on the computer.
  10. Click OK.

This completes the software uninstall procedure.

Post-Uninstall Considerations

Uninstall Components from a Windows Computer - Clustered Environment

Before You Begin

To uninstall components from a Windows computer in a clustered environment:

  1. Log on to the computer as the Domain User with administrative privileges to all nodes in the cluster. If the currently active node is not the original node, manually fail over the active node to the original node and then perform the uninstall.
To figure out whether a node is the original owner, open the Add/Remove Programs icon from the Windows Control Panel and verify whether there is an entry for the component that is being uninstalled. The entry will be available only in the original owner node.
  2. Open the Add/Remove Programs icon in the system’s Control Panel.

For Windows Vista, click Uninstall a Program under Programs in the Control Panel.

  3. Select the component to be uninstalled, including the virtual server and then click Remove.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.

  9. Click Yes to All, then Yes to remove any shared files that exist. The uninstall will only remove files installed by the component software.
    • If some elements of the program could not be uninstalled, a dialog box indicates this condition. A file may still be open or in use. Click Details for a listing of the files or folders that could not be uninstalled.
    • If you are uninstalling the CommServe, observe the following:
      • The uninstall program does not delete the <install directory>/base folder. These folders are only removed when your host machine is restarted. If you do not want to restart your host system, then manually delete these folders.

From your Cluster Administrator, verify that the cluster resources were removed.

  10. Press <F5> to refresh the Add/Remove Programs screen.
  11. Repeat Steps 4 through 11 until all desired components are removed from the virtual server(s).

If desired, you can repeat Steps 4 through 11 for the local machine to uninstall the software as well.

  12. For Multiple Disk Groups, repeat all of the above steps for each virtual server on each disk group in the cluster.

This completes the software uninstall from this node in the cluster.

Repeat this procedure on each computer in the cluster configured to host the virtual server from which you uninstalled a software component, until that component has been removed from all nodes.

Post-Uninstall Considerations

Delete the Agent

Before You Begin

You can perform agent operations as long as the agent is installed and appears enabled in the CommCell Browser. However, if you have no need to run jobs on the agent data of a client computer, you may want to delete the agent that resides on that computer. Once you have uninstalled or DeConfigured the agent, the corresponding icon in the CommCell Browser is grayed out. While this icon exists, you can recover data from the agent to another client. If you delete this icon, all of the agent's data is irretrievably lost.

NOTES

Deleting the agent is a two-phase process.

Required Capability: See Capabilities and Permitted Actions

To delete an agent:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the icon of the agent that you want to delete, and then click Delete. (The agent software must first have been uninstalled/DeConfigured or the delete option on the shortcut menu will not appear.)
  2. A warning message prompts you with the following: This operation will permanently delete the data backed up from this level and it cannot be restored. Click Ok to continue with the deletion operation. (Clicking No will abort the operation.)
  3. From the Confirmation Text dialog box, enter the confirmation text string, erase and reuse media. Click Ok. The agent icon and the data that corresponds to the selected agent will be deleted. Consequently, you will not be able to browse or recover this data.

Delete a Client Computer

Before You Begin

Required Capability: Capabilities and Permitted Actions

To delete a client computer:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the icon of the client computer that you want to delete, click All Tasks and then click Delete from the short-cut menu.

If the Delete command is not available, then you have not successfully deleted the base client software (if relevant) from the client computer.

  2. A confirmation message appears. Click Yes to delete the client computer or click No to cancel the deletion.

If you click Yes, the backup data that corresponds to the selected client computer is deleted. Consequently, you will not be able to browse or restore this data. If you click Yes, the client computer icon is removed from the view.

Delete a Pseudo-Client

Before You Begin

Required Capability: Capabilities and Permitted Actions

To delete a pseudo-client:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the icon of the pseudo-client that you want to delete, click All Tasks and then click Delete from the short-cut menu.

For a NAS client, if the Delete command is not shown, you have not deconfigured the client, and the Deconfigure command will be shown instead; refer to Deconfiguring Agents. (There is no base client software for a NAS Client.)

  2. A confirmation message is displayed. Click OK, type the supplied phrase in the Enter Confirmation Text dialog box, and click OK. The pseudo-client icon should be removed from the view.

Delete a Client Computer Group

Required Capability: Capabilities and Permitted Actions

To delete a client computer group:

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the icon of the client computer group that you want to delete, click All Tasks and then click Delete from the short-cut menu.
