The Office Communications Server is made up of data, settings, and metadata that are critical to data protection operations residing in both the File System and SQL databases. In order to fully protect the Office Communications Server, both the OCS data and settings and the OCS metadata have to be backed up. OCS data and settings are backed up and restored as a part of OCS enabled Windows File System iDataAgent. Selecting this option enables the iDataAgent to perform application consistent data protection operations of the OCS data and settings. OCS metadata is protected using the SQL Server iDataAgent.
OCS data and settings can be backed up by any subclient of a Windows File System iDataAgent backup set, for which the OCS backup is enabled. (See Enable OCS Backup for more information.) Within a backup set, however, only one subclient can back up the OCS data and settings. The OCS portion is always backed up in full whether you select full, incremental, or differential backup for the subclient that includes the OCS.

The OCS application stores its metadata in a SQL database. You should use the SQL Server iDataAgent to backup and restore the OCS database that contains the OCS metadata.
This feature requires a Feature License to be available in the CommServe® Server.

To backup OCS you need the following licenses:
- iDataAgent for Microsoft Windows Server Class File System license. This license is consumed when the software is installed in the computer.
- iDataAgent for Microsoft SQL Server license. This license is consumed when the software is installed in the computer.
- Office Communication Server license. This license is consumed when Office Communication Server Backup is enabled for a client.

To backup OCS you must install the following components:
- Windows File System iDataAgent on all computers with OCS. See Deployment - Windows File System iDataAgent for more information.
