Considerations

Overview

Thresholds are similar to alerts in principle. While an alert defines an automated response to some class of events that may occur, a threshold defines an automated response to conditions that may arise in the output of a report. Like an alert, a threshold consists of a set of conditions and a defined action. Each time a report is generated, the system then checks the report output against any thresholds that have been defined for that type of report. If the conditions for a threshold are met, the system carries out the defined action. Thresholds may be created, cloned, edited, and deleted. Multiple thresholds may be defined for the same conditions, with the same or different associated actions.

Thresholds can be set for a particular report to perform the following functions when the threshold is met:

Send an user defined Email/Pager message
Send SNMP Trap message to a third-party monitor
Initiate an Event Viewer operation
Execute a user defined command

To set a threshold, you create one or more filters by selecting a predefined data type (based on report type) and predefined operator for each filter, and entering a user defined value to be met. You select whether all filters or any one filter must be matched, for the Threshold to be met. Finally, you define an action for the threshold.

While adding multiple conditions for Threshold Alerts, you can choose Logical Operators "AND" or "OR" to perform the desired logical operations between the listed conditions. The final operator selected is applied across all the conditions thereby allowing the use of only one Logical Operator for specifying conditions on Thresholds for SRM Reports.

SRM and Data Archiver

Data Archiver operations can be initiated for the following agents:

SRM Windows File System
SRM Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Once initiated, a Data Archiver job will start on all of the Data Archiver subclients containing the volumes or CIFS shares that meet the defined threshold conditions. Note that if a Data Archiver subclient contains multiple volumes or CIFS shares, all of its contents will be archived according the archiving rules you have set, if at least one volume or CIFS share meets your threshold conditions. Migration Archiving operations are always performed on subclients in their entirety. Configure separate DataArchiver subclients for each volume or CIFS share to avoid this scenario. To initiate the Data Archiver operations for these agents, you must define thresholds that when met, will launch the operation. To do this, follow the steps in Add Thresholds for Reports using the following parameters.

It is recommended that you verify the successful completion of the Data Archiver job in the CommCell Console. For more information, see View the Details of a Job.

Considerations

Although the threshold criteria for the SRM NAS Agent are based on volumes, the corresponding CIFS shares are archived. When a logical volume meets a threshold criteria, a list of all of the CIFS shares on that volume are sent to Data Archiver to be archived.
If the Data Archiver job successfully starts, but then fails for any reason, the SRM Server will not be notified. However, the same condition on the SRM Windows File System Client would trigger a new Threshold Action the next time the report is run.
The Event Viewer displays details about errors encountered during the Data Archiver operations.
