Recovering the CommCell at a Hot-Site

Recovering the CommCell at a Hot-Site

Infrastructure Recovery

The following steps outline the process involved in recovering the CommCell:

  1. Rebuild the CommServe. If you have SRM Server installed with the CommServe, see SRM Disaster Recovery for information on rebuilding the CommServe and the SRM Server. As mentioned earlier, this step can be avoided (and precious time saved) by pre-staging the CommServe.
Make sure that you do not install any other components on the new computer except the CommServe.

As a part of the CommServe restore, information on all the components in the CommCell will also be restored. Hence these components (although not physically present) will be displayed in the CommCell Console.

  2. Perform Post-Recovery Operations using the CommServe Recovery Tool.
  3. Install new MediaAgents and configure the library attached to the MediaAgents.

As mentioned earlier, the library and drives must be compatible with the library and drives in the original environment. For more information on restoring a MediaAgent to a different computer, see MediaAgent Recovery - How To.

  4. Install the clients and restore data using the cross iDataAgent restore option from the CommCell Console or rebuild the clients using the full iDataAgent restore procedure. For information on full iDataAgent restore procedure, see Disaster Recovery.

Use appropriate media with the required data set for performing the restore. Insert the appropriate media into a compatible library and perform the perform the appropriate restore operation.

Note, to perform data protection operation in the hot-site you may have to change the data paths from the Storage Policy Copy. This operation logically moves the media from one Storage Policy Copy to another, which in this case would be the copy attached to the inactive library (in the previous production site) to a copy attached to the new library (in the hot-site). See Change Data Path for more information.

Direct Data Recovery from Media

In the unlikely event a CommCell has been rendered unusable or inaccessible, Media Explorer can be used to quickly view and recover backup data directly from any media, including tape, optical or magnetic media, in the event of a disaster. It can be used to retrieve and rebuild any Windows, UNIX or NetWare based computer, including the system state and Operating System related data. See Media Explorer for more information.
