Seamless Upgrade on a CommServe
Performing
a Full Software Replacement on a CommServe Computer
Use the following procedure to upgrade the operating system without removing
software.
Before You Begin
The following instructions apply only if it is required for the computer you
are upgrading.
- From the CommCell Console, kill all jobs that are running, waiting, pending, or stopped.
- As a precautionary measure, perform a Disaster Recovery
Backup.
- Unload all tapes from all drives in every library attached to the
computer you are upgrading.
- From the Activity Control tab of the
CommCell properties in the CommCell Console, disable data protection and
data recovery operations.
- From the Service Control Manager window, stop all services.
To perform
a seamless upgrade on a CommServe computer:
- Upgrade the operating system.
- If the computer also has the MediaAgent software installed, do the following:
- From the Services window, disable the RSM service.
- Power-on the library.
- Detect the connected device.
- Disable the media changer for the library in the
Windows Device Manager.
- From the Library and Drive Configuration window, confirm that
all libraries and drives remain configured and detected. If a library or
drive is configured, but not detected, detect devices again using the
Library and Drive Configuration window. For more information on detecting
devices, see
Detect Devices.

If the computer also has the Windows File System
iDataAgent software installed:
- Uninstall the old Windows File System iDataAgent software.
- Re-install the new Windows File System iDataAgent software.
- Reapply Automatic Updates for the Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003
iDataAgents.
- If services are not already started, restart services from the Service
Control Manager window.
- When all upgrades are complete for the CommCell, enable data protection
and data recovery operations.
You have completed the operating system upgrade procedure for a CommServe computer.
Use the following procedure to completely remove and replace the operating system.
Before You Begin
The following instructions apply only if it is required for the computer you
are upgrading.
- Perform a Disaster Recovery Backup and make sure it is not on
the computer that is going to be upgraded.
- If the magnetic library is stored on this computer, before the upgrade
perform an Auxiliary Copy or take the necessary steps to protect your data
on the magnetic library.
- From the CommCell Console, kill all
jobs that are running, waiting, pending, or stopped.
- Unload all tapes from all drives in every library attached to the
computer you are upgrading.
- From the Service Control Manager window, stop all services.
To perform
a full software replacement on a CommServe computer:
- Install the appropriate Windows operating system using the Clean Install
option.
Make sure you re-configure the hard drive with the same partitions
and formats (FAT, NTFS) and TCP/IP as they were previously configured.
- Locate your original installation license file for the installed version.
Or obtain a temporary license from your software provider if necessary.
- Install the CommServe software for the upgraded operating system, including
any updates.
- Perform a Disaster Recovery Backup operation. (For more information, see
Disaster Recovery Backup).
- If the computer also has the MediaAgent software installed, you must re-install
the MediaAgent software, including updates.
- If the computer also has the Windows File System
iDataAgent software installed:
- Re-install the new Windows File System
iDataAgent software, if you have a license.
- Reapply updates for the appropriate Windows
iDataAgent.
- Re-install all other agents that were previously installed, including updates.
- Configure the libraries and drives again.
You have completed the upgrade procedure for a CommServe computer.
MediaAgent - Upgrade the Operating System
Use the following procedure to upgrade or fully replace any Operating System.
Before You Begin
The following instructions apply only if it is required for the computer you
are upgrading.
- From the CommCell Console, kill all jobs that are running, waiting, pending, or stopped.
- As a precautionary measure, perform a Disaster Recovery
Backup.
- Unload all tapes from all drives in every library attached to the
computer you are upgrading.
- From the Activity Control tab of the
CommCell properties in the CommCell Console, disable data protection and
data recovery operations.
- From the Service Control Manager window, stop all services.
To
perform an operating system upgrade on a MediaAgent computer:
- Power off all libraries connected to this MediaAgent.
- Uninstall the MediaAgent and any File System
iDataAgent (if present).

WARNING: Do not delete any Storage Policies or Deconfigure any
libraries, as this will cause data loss. |
- Upgrade/replace the operating system.
- Power-on the library.
- Detect the connected devices.
- For Windows 2000 or 2003, from the Services window, disable the
RSM service.
- Disable the media changer for the library in the
Windows Device Manager.
- Install the MediaAgent
and all updates, as well as any File System iDataAgent
(if desired).
- If services are not already started, restart services from the
Service Control Manager window.
- From the Library and Drive Configuration window, confirm that all
libraries and drives remain configured and detected. If a library or drive
is configured, but not detected, detect devices again using the Library
and Drive Configuration window. For more information on detecting devices, see
Detect Devices.
- From the Activity Control tab of the
CommCell properties in the CommCell Console, enable data protection and
data recovery operations.
You have completed the operating system upgrade procedure for a MediaAgent
computer.

- Identify the computers to be upgraded and what software is installed.
- Ensure that you have all the information required for the
Windows Install Checklist before uninstalling, installing, or upgrading
any software. The Windows File System
iDataAgent software must be re-installed using the same
configuration as the original install, in order to access the backed
up data and history from the previous installation.

and history will be lost.

- Ensure the client is installed with the same Fully Qualified Domain
Name or short domain name with which it had been previously installed.

The operating system upgrade procedure
is now complete. |

- Install any Updates or Service Packs that may have been made available
after the release of the Windows File System
iDataAgent software.
- Ensure that backups and restores are no longer disabled. If necessary,
enable backups and restores from the Activity Control tab of the Agent
Properties dialog box.
- It is recommended to run a full backup of the default subclient
after performing an OS upgrade to secure the new operating system data.
Do not perform the following operations until a full backup has been
run:
- Full System Restore
- Synthetic Full Backup
- After
upgrading the Microsoft Windows operating system, do not browse the
System State data
that was backed up before the upgrade and perform an in-place restore to
the upgraded computer.
- Reinstall all other iDataAgents
that were previously installed, including any post-release Updates or
Service Packs, in the same locations in which they were previously installed.

Whenever you upgrade the operating system of a client computer, you must uninstall the Base software and
File System iDataAgent software
prior to the operating system upgrade and then reinstall these modules
after the operating system upgrade. |
|
- Identify the computers to be upgraded and what software is installed.
- Ensure that you have all the information required for the
Unix
Install Checklist before uninstalling, installing, or upgrading
any software. The Unix File System iDataAgent
software must be re-installed using the same configuration as the original
install, in order to access the backed up data and history from the
previous installation.

is in running, waiting, pending, or stopped state on the client being upgraded. |

From the CommCell Console, right-click the Client, select
Properties, then the Activity Control tab. Disable data protection
and data recovery operations, and click OK.

iDataAgent software in the following
order: Unix File System iDataAgent
software, any other associated software besides the Base software (e.g.,
MediaAgent software, WA SCSI driver software), then the Base software. See
Uninstalling Components
for more information.
NOTES
- This step is not necessary if you are completely replacing your
operating system with a clean install; do this only if you are upgrading
your operating system.
- Do not delete the client’s iDataAgent
icon in the CommCell Console. If you do, the associated backup data
and history will be lost.

Proceed as follows:

- Ensure the client is installed with the same Fully Qualified Domain
Name or short domain name with which it had been previously installed.

- Install any Updates or Service Packs that may have been made available
after the release of the Unix File System
iDataAgent software.
- Ensure that backups and restores are no longer disabled. If necessary,
enable backups and restores from the Activity Control tab of the Agent
Properties dialog box.
- It is recommended to run a full backup of the default subclient
after performing an OS upgrade to secure the new operating system data.
Do not perform the following operations until a full backup has been
run:
- Full iDataAgent Restore
- System State Restore
- Synthetic Full Backup
- Reinstall all other iDataAgents
that were previously installed, including any post-release Updates or
Service Packs, in the same locations in which they were previously installed.

Macintosh File System - Upgrade the Operating System

upgrading any software. The Macintosh File System

in order to access the backed up data and history from the previous
installation.

not choose the Autoload Galaxy each time the operating system starts
option, you must type the command Load Galaxy at the NetWare server’s
system console. |

The operating system upgrade procedure

after the release of the NetWare iDataAgent
software.
- Ensure that backups and restores are no longer disabled. If necessary,
