Overview - File Archiver for Windows Agent

Choose from the following topics:

Introduction

The File Archiver for Windows Agent is a software module that is responsible for periodically moving unused or infrequently used Windows File System or NAS File Server data on a host computer to secondary storage, thereby reducing the size of data on the primary storage. Migration Archiver Agents reduce the duration of backup windows by reducing the amount of data to be backed up by an iDataAgent.

Supported Data Types

The File Archiver for Windows Agent provides data protection support for all data types, except for those listed below.

Not Recommended for Archiving

The following file types/objects are not recommended for archiving. Although it is possible to archive them, doing so could cause applications or the operating system to not function properly.

Not Supported for Archiving

The following file types/objects are automatically filtered out of archive operations by the system, and cannot be archived.

* Mount points to volumes are supported.

Supported Protocols

Supported File Systems

Supported Modes

For FPolicy and Celerra instances CIFS for NFS with AD NIS mapping is supported.

Tree Levels in the File Archiver for Windows Agent

When the File Archiver for Windows Agent is installed, the following levels are automatically created in the CommCell Browser.

File Archiver:  Agents - File Archiver

  • Before performing a Migration Archiving Operation using the File Archiver for Windows Agent, you must first create an Instance, configure the Default Archive Set, and then create a User-Defined Subclient. See Instances - File Archiver and Subclients - File Archiver for Windows for more information.
  • In cases where the File Archiver for Windows Agent is installed on the same client as the Data Classification Enabler, after creating the Local Archiving Instance type, a DataClassSet will appear below the Local Archiving Instance.

License Requirement

To perform a data protection operation using this Agent a specific Product License must be available in the CommServe® Server.

Review general license requirements included in License Administration. Also, View All Licenses provides step-by-step instructions on how to view the license information.

The File Archiver for Windows Agent requires the following licenses:

A license is released when the last instance using the license is deconfigured or deleted, or when the File Archiver for Windows Agent is deconfigured or uninstalled.

Installation

Besides the CommServe and MediaAgent, there are two software components to be installed for the File Archiver for Windows Agent:

These components can be installed locally or remotely. The remote install feature provides the administrator an avenue to install the File Archiver for Windows Agent and/or File Share Archiver Client to one or multiple network enterprise computers without physically going to each computer. For the procedures on installing these components, refer to Deployment - File Archiver for Windows.

  • Stub recall support for NetApp filers running supported ONTAP versions can be configured through the use of FPolicy instances in which case, you do not need to install the File Share Archiver Client component.
  • Archiving and recovery of data residing on EMC Celerra File Servers can be configured through a Celerra instance of the File Archiver for Windows Agent, which alleviates the need to install the File Share Archiver Client component.

Configuration

The migration archiving operation is based on subclients, so the following configuration is per subclient basis. The following options are located in the subclient Properties (Rules) tab.

Archiving Rules

The configuration of the archiving rules is central to customizing migration archiving operations to meet the needs of your organization. For more information, see Overview.

  • Archiving Rules are initially disabled by default. After creating a subclient, you must clear the Disable All Rules option and configure archiving rules before Archive Operations are possible. Otherwise, the system will ignore all archiving rules (except for the Do Not Create Stub rule) for the subclient.
  • Keep in mind that when archiving rules are disabled for File Archiver for Windows, the only way to perform migration archiving operations is by using the On Demand File List.

Storage Policy

The retention criteria for preserving archived data through Storage Policies associated with DataArchiver Agents is based only on time, not cycles. For more information on Storage Policies, see Storage Policies.

Indexing Option

To keep the index within a manageable size, a new index will be created every certain number of archive operations. This value can be entered in the Set index cycle to every n archive jobs field on the subclient properties Rules tab.

Archive and Recovery

Migration Archiving

After configuration is completed, the recovery administrator can schedule migration archiving jobs, similar to scheduling backup jobs for iDataAgents. To ensure that only successfully archived files will be changed into stubs, the migration archiving operation is divided into two phases: archiving and stubbing. The stubbing phase starts after the archiving phase succeeds. However, stubs will only be created if the subclient properties were configured to create them during archiving.

In the archiving phase, File Archiver for Windows will archive the files meeting the pre-set archiving criteria and, if applicable, put them into a list for the stubbing phase and prune expired stubs.

Refer to Migration Archiving for more information on archiving.

Recovery

File Archiver for Windows provides two ways to recover an archived file: by accessing the file with an Open operation (e.g., opening a stub in an application, double-clicking a stub in Windows Explorer) or from the CommCell Console (stand-alone application).

The stub recovery method is only available on workstations that either have the File Share Archiver Client component installed or are configured with FPolicy or Celerra instances. For more information, see Instances - File Archiver.

The second method of recovery is from the CommCell Console, the browse of File Archiver for Windows data is forced to be a non-image browse to view all the archived files in this archiving cycle (i.e., since last creation of new index). The system administrator can browse and find the file to recover. To find files archived earlier than the last creation of new index, the administrator can provide a point-in-time in the Browse Options dialog box.

Refer to Recover Archived Data for more information on Recovery operations.

Disaster Recovery Considerations

The File Archiver for Windows product does not provide the ability to restore the entire system in the event of a disaster. Systems using an Archiver Agent should also be protected using the corresponding backup and recovery agent. File Archiver for Windows relies upon the Windows File System iDataAgent to perform a full system restore of client data. For more information, see Restore Data - Windows File Systems - Full System Restore.
