Windows File System - Upgrade the Operating System

Before You Begin

Operating System Upgrade Procedure

Post-Upgrade Considerations

Before You Begin

  • Identify the computers to be upgraded and what software is installed.
  • Ensure that you have all the information required for the Windows Install before uninstalling, installing, or upgrading any software. The Windows File System iDataAgent software must be re-installed using the same configuration as the original install, in order to access the backed up data and history from the previous installation.

Operating System Upgrade Procedure

1. From the CommCell Console, Kill a Job that is in running, waiting, pending, or stopped state on the client being upgraded.
2. From the CommCell Console, right-click the Client, select Properties, then the Activity Control tab. Disable data protection and data recovery operations, and click OK.
3. If required, uninstall the Windows File System iDataAgent software. See Uninstalling Components for more information.

NOTES

  • This step is not necessary if you are completely replacing your operating system with a clean install; do this only if you are upgrading your operating system.
  • Do not delete the client’s iDataAgent icon in the CommCell Console. If you do, the associated backup data and history will be lost.
4. Upgrade, or install the new version of, the operating system.
5. Reinstall the Windows File System iDataAgent software. See Deployment - Windows File System iDataAgent.

NOTES

  • The iDataAgent software should be installed to the same directory in which it was previously installed.
  • Ensure the client is installed with the same Fully Qualified Domain Name or short domain name with which it had been previously installed.
6. The operating system upgrade procedure is now complete.

Post-Upgrade Considerations

  • Install any Updates or Service Packs that may have been made available after the release of the Windows File System iDataAgent software.
  • Ensure that backups and restores are no longer disabled. If necessary, enable backups and restores from the Activity Control tab of the Agent Properties dialog box.
  • It is recommended to run a full backup of the default subclient after performing an OS upgrade to secure the new operating system data. Do not perform the following operations until a full backup has been run:
    • Full System Restore
    • Synthetic Full Backup
  • After upgrading the Microsoft Windows operating system, do not browse the System State data that was backed up before the upgrade and perform an in-place restore to the upgraded computer.
  • Reinstall all other iDataAgents that were previously installed, including any post-release Updates or Service Packs, in the same locations in which they were previously installed. See Installation for installation procedures.

3. If required, uninstall the iDataAgent software in the following order: Unix File System iDataAgent software, any other associated software besides the Base software (e.g., MediaAgent software, WA SCSI driver software), then the Base software.
