Recover a Message from Outlook Web Access (OWA)
Before You Begin
- Review the general recovery requirements from What You Need to Know Before Performing a Recovery and any agent-specific recovery requirements from Recovery Considerations for these Agents prior to performing any recovery.
- Since no stub icons are available for OWA 2003, the following enhancements have been made to allow you to easily distinguish them from normal messages in that version of OWA and any supported version of Outlook:
- For Public Folder Archiver and 7.0 pre-Service Pack 3 data archived by Exchange 2003/2007 Mailbox Archiver, message stubs are distinguished in Outlook and OWA 2003/2007 by displaying the word "ARCHIVED:" in the Subject line.
- For data archived after installing 7.0 Service Pack 3, Exchange 2003/2007 Mailbox Archiver allows Subject line text to be customized using the StubIdentifier registry key, otherwise no stub identification text will display in the Subject line.
- Exchange data that has been archived with pass-phrase encryption cannot be recovered from Outlook Web Access (OWA), and can only be recovered by performing a Browse and Recovery operation from the CommCell Console.
Required Capability: None.
To
recover a mail message or public folder item from Outlook Web Access (OWA):
- Log in to your mailbox in Outlook Web Access (OWA).
- In order to recover a message or item that has been archived, locate the message
or item
you want to recover in OWA, then double-click the stub.
- The Archived Message dialog box will indicate that the message being
opened is an archived message and will ask whether you want to recover the
original message. You can select the Delete stub after recovery
checkbox to delete the stub after the message or item has been recovered. Also, you
can select the Do not show this page again checkbox to prevent the
Archived Message dialog box from being displayed again during subsequent
recoveries. Click Recover to continue.
NOTES
- The Delete stub after recovery option is not supported for stubs created
in prior releases of this product.
However, these stubs can still be manually deleted after recovery.
- To re-enable the display of the Archived Message dialog box after selecting the Do not show this page again option, delete the
<user>@exchange[n].txt or <user>@<web_server_name>[n].txt
cookie from the local "../Documents and
Settings/<user>/Cookies" folder. After deleting the
cookie, log off the mailbox and log back on from OWA for the change to
take affect.

of the recovery. After the recovery has completed you can double-click the
message or item to view its contents.
